DC’s Absolute Universe continues to be incredibly popular with fans of classic comic characters. Following successful series focused on heroes like Green Arrow, Catwoman, the Robins, Poison Ivy, and Zatanna, DC is adding another well-known Batman character to the lineup – and their new ‘Absolute’ series will arrive soon.
HeroesCon, a comic book convention this weekend, featured some surprising news from DC’s Absolute Universe. During a DC panel, Scott Snyder announced that Absolute Batgirl will first appear in Absolute Batman #24. He also showed attendees what she’ll look like, and Chris Anton shared a picture of the reveal.
Everything We Know About Absolute Batgirl

The latest look at Batgirl – now calling herself The Bat – was unveiled today. Her new costume includes a mask similar to Batman’s, armor, and a striking yellow symbol that looks like it was spray-painted on. She’s equipped with tactical boots and pants, a brown trench coat, and carries a shotgun. According to the creators, she wears Kevlar underneath the coat and fights more like an MMA athlete. The trench coat is a special item – it belonged to her father. Importantly, she’s the only one who knows Batman is innocent.
Okay, so if you’re just jumping into this story, let me fill you in on Barbara’s role. I’ve always seen her as a real believer in Batman – she consistently highlights all the good he does for Gotham, even with everyone constantly criticizing him. There was this one time, he was really down, at a low point, and she could have turned him in to the police, but she didn’t. She actually let him go! She did keep his cowl as a memento, though, which I always found a fascinating detail.
After Batman reached out to Barbara and explained why he needed her help – because he trusted her skills as a police officer – she eagerly assisted him. This included working alongside him against Poison Ivy, but she was disturbed by his methods when he completely stripped away what little humanity remained in Pamela Isley, even after she had given him the information he sought.
Everything culminated recently with the arrival of Scarecrow. He has the power to manipulate people into committing awful acts, and tragically, he did so to James Gordon, pushing the deeply paranoid Commissioner to fall from a building to his death. While Scarecrow was responsible, witnesses only saw Batman at the scene. Barbara contacted Batman through his cowl, desperately asking if he had killed her father, but he remained silent.
These events help explain Barbara’s transformation, and Anton provides some nice extra details. She’s wearing the Batman cowl she discovered, and her father’s trench coat as a tribute to him. Importantly, she isn’t seeking revenge on Batman, because she believes he wasn’t responsible for her father’s death.
Batman is currently struggling with the fallout from Scarecrow’s actions. While he deals with this, his daughter steps up as the new Bat, determined to find Scarecrow and get revenge for her father’s death. She’s using a modified shotgun – one that Batman previously altered from a regular weapon into a non-lethal Batarang shotgun, still powerful but designed to incapacitate rather than kill.
Fans won’t have to wait much longer for her first appearance! Absolute Batgirl will be featured in Absolute Batman #24, coming to comic shops in September 2026.
