Waiting for The Batman Part II felt easier after the TV series The Penguin came out in 2024. The show focused on Colin Farrell’s portrayal of the villain and was similar in style to The Sopranos, showing how Oz Cobb climbed the ranks of Gotham’s criminal world following the events with the Riddler. The Penguin received a lot of positive attention, including many Emmy nominations, thanks to its captivating story and strong acting. Despite being popular, it doesn’t seem like a second season will be made.
According to industry analyst Jeff Sneider’s latest newsletter, fans shouldn’t expect a Season 2 of The Penguin. He reports that Colin Farrell will only appear briefly in The Batman Part II, and as a result, DC and HBO have decided not to continue The Penguin beyond its initial limited run.
The Penguin’s Future In Matt Reeves’ Batman Franchise Explained

While those making The Penguin have hinted at continuing the story somehow, it was originally planned as a limited series designed to connect Matt Reeves’ first and second Batman films. There was hope that its huge success would encourage Reeves and his team to create another season. However, it now appears further installments aren’t likely, which will be disappointing for fans. Many consider The Penguin one of the best TV shows in recent years, beautifully expanding on Colin Farrell’s fantastic performance in The Batman.
Fans are disappointed that Colin Farrell’s role in The Batman Part II will be small, as he won’t begin filming for several weeks. This means limited screen time for his character, The Penguin, which is a shame given how popular and compelling the character became in the recent spin-off series. It seems the timing didn’t work out, as the script for The Batman Part II was already well-developed before The Penguin gained momentum, leaving director Matt Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin with no chance to expand the character’s role. Additionally, Cristin Milioti won’t be returning as Sofia Falcone, despite the series finale hinting at a connection between her character and Selina Kyle.
Although we likely won’t see much of the Penguin (Oz) or Sofia Falcone for a while, their story within the Batman universe isn’t over. Director Matt Reeves is planning a third movie to complete the trilogy, and he could easily give Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti more prominent roles in it. Both characters are already well-developed and popular enough that it would be a missed opportunity not to include them significantly in The Batman 3. The first two films and the upcoming TV series could then serve as a foundation, slowly building Penguin up to be the main villain in the final installment.
More spin-off shows based on The Batman are possible, and we might see the character Oz Cobb appear in one of them. However, there’s no guarantee any of these projects will actually happen. Even if they’re being developed, a great story is needed, and other factors could still prevent them from moving forward. It’s also worth noting that The Batman’s story isn’t currently connected to the larger DC Universe franchise, which is building its own version of Gotham City with characters like Clayface and a new Batman movie. While James Gunn has said both versions can exist, it might be easier for everyone if The Batman’s storyline concluded, clearing the path for the DCU.
