Billy Batson is a unique superhero. By saying the word “Shazam,” he instantly transforms from an ordinary kid into a powerful adult with strength comparable to Superman. Originally, “Shazam” was the name of the wizard who gave Billy his abilities, and Billy’s superhero identity was Captain Marvel. However, a legal issue with the Marvel company prevented DC Comics from continuing to use the name Captain Marvel. As a result, DC began focusing comics around the name “Shazam,” and eventually, with a major reboot, officially changed Billy’s superhero name to Shazam to match the title.
Resolving the practical issues created complications with the character’s backstory. The name ‘Wizard’ held a special significance – Billy Batson would revert to his child form whenever he tried to say it. While details of this effect have changed depending on the writer and story, the name change wasn’t a complete fix. DC Comics seems to agree. As of Justice League Unlimited #18, they’ve brought Billy back to being Captain Marvel, but it’s questionable whether this will stick.
Oh Captain, My Captain of Confusion

Billy Batson, the hero known as Shazam, has a surprisingly complicated history with his name. While not as famous as Superman or Batman, he’s fairly well-recognized by most superhero fans. His transformation sequence – shouting “Shazam!” and changing into his superhero form – is what people remember most. Given this, it makes sense to simply call him Shazam, especially when you consider Marvel’s Captain Marvel, who is currently more popular and shares a name with their company.
It’s natural for people to immediately think of the Marvel Comics character when they hear “Captain Marvel.” Having a DC character with the same name could confuse new fans, and surprisingly, that initial impression can make or break their interest. This issue is made worse by DC’s choice to rebrand as Shazam in 2011. Since then, Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel) has been featured in two movies, while the Marvel version has become incredibly popular thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Today’s fans largely know him as Shazam, as DC has actively promoted that name. Essentially, Shazam is competing with a more well-known Captain Marvel, and that puts him at a disadvantage.
It might surprise you to learn this isn’t the first time Billy Batson’s superhero name has been altered recently. In the 2023 film Shazam!, he was officially called Captain. This appears to have been a way for DC to gauge fan reaction to Billy not being known as Shazam, and the generally neutral response encouraged them to fully embrace the Captain Marvel name. Interestingly, both Shazam! (2023) and Justice League Unlimited were penned by Mark Waid, a known admirer of the Silver Age of comics and Billy Batson himself, suggesting he’s the reason for this change back to an older moniker.
The Captain’s Pros and Cons

Aside from the practical difficulties, renaming the character Captain Marvel brings both benefits and drawbacks for DC. It will satisfy longtime fans who disliked the name change and simply preferred the original moniker. It also simplifies storytelling around the magic word that transforms Billy Batson and the Shazamily. Previously, plotlines often revolved around whether or not they could say the word, and forcing or tricking them to do so was a common tactic. Reverting to Captain Marvel opens up those story possibilities again, without the complication of Billy being able to use the word at any time.
This change also simplifies the character’s history and mythology. The Wizard can once again be known as Shazam, and Billy Batson will revert to transforming whenever he says the name. While this creates a more consistent story and appeals to long-time fans, it might confuse newer viewers. Billy’s superhero name has changed frequently over the years – he was Captain Marvel for seventy-one years, Shazam for twelve, just ‘the Captain’ for three, and then Captain Marvel again. Hopefully, this latest change to Shazam will last, and DC won’t change it back in a few years.
