DC’s New Movie-Inspired Krypto Redesign Revealed

James Gunn’s version of Superman, titled “Superman,” has made its grand entrance in cinemas, and it seems to be an outstanding film according to many viewers. What particularly caught the attention of numerous fans is the exciting addition of Superman’s beloved companion, Krypto the Superdog. In contrast to the standard labrador retriever appearance, Gunn introduced a revamped design for Krypto as a terrier mix, inspired by his personal dog, Ozu. Typically, the Big Two comic book companies prefer their characters on screen to closely resemble their comic book counterparts when movies are released, in order to attract potential new fans. Consequently, Krypto underwent a complete makeover to appear more similar to his movie version. Issue #3 of “Superman Unlimited” unveiled a fresh look for Krypto, and he remains as lovable as ever.

Krypto Wants to Be a Good Boy

The trouble begins when Clark shares his struggles in mastering his powers during his childhood. At times, he found himself existing in a fragile paper mache world that could be easily destroyed by him if caution wasn’t taken. This was also true for Krypto, who not only faced the same power development, but dealt with it instinctively as a dog would. As a young pup, Krypto caused quite a bit of chaos – from tearing into the freezer in search of treats to almost burning squirrels he played with. Learning to manage his overpowering abilities was challenging for Krypto, yet he eventually adapted, as demonstrated by his assistance in preventing crime alongside Superman today.

In the latest redesign, Krypto appears stunningly realistic, closely mirroring his cinematic appearance. This comic book explores Krypto at two life stages: as a playful puppy and a fully-fledged superdog. The story showcases various situations for Krypto, ranging from simple canine activities like sneakily eating bacon hidden under the table, to traversing the globe multiple times with Jon Kent on walks. Despite Jon’s repeated efforts to slow him down in several languages, Krypto remains undeterred due to his unbridled enthusiasm.

Eventually, they halt their journey in Smallville for a heart-to-heart with Ma and Pa Kent. They express concern about Jon remaining in Smallville temporarily, given his current employment status, prompting Jon to command Krypto to behave and return home. However, on his way back, Krypto catches the scent of one of Superman’s longtime adversaries: Toyman. While a regular dog would head home, a superdog like Krypto follows the trail, determined to protect the day.

Trouble at the Metropolis Science Expo

The inventor known as Toyman brings his large robot creation to the Science Expo in Metropolis. Krypto, Superman’s canine companion, starts examining it but soon finds trouble when he discovers the robot is powered by Kryptonite. This weakens Krypto, and Superman jumps into action to help his friend. However, the robot proves to be too much for even Superman with his temporary resistance to Kryptonite. In a surprising twist, it’s revealed that Toyman isn’t Winslow Schott as we know him, but rather a sentient toy created by Schott, possessing a more compassionate nature. The new Toyman hides the Kryptonite, allowing Superman to take Krypto to the Fortress of Solitude for healing. As an apology, Toyman sends Krypto toys, miniature flying robots modeled after Superman’s most formidable enemies.
