Okay, so things have gotten really interesting in the DC Universe. For a while there, the Justice League was totally broken up after the whole Dark Crisis thing. But then Amanda Waller tried to lock up all the superpowered people with this plan called Absolute Power, and it made everyone realize how much they needed the League back. What’s different this time around is that anyone who wanted to join… could. And honestly, it’s mostly worked! Though, it’s a little shocking to see some of the new members – let’s just say a few reformed villains are now wearing the League’s colors.
The new Justice League faced its first major challenge when Darkseid returned in DC K.O. A cosmic tournament was held, pitting the League’s greatest heroes against some of their most dangerous foes, all vying for immense power – enough to finally defeat Darkseid. Superman won the tournament and became King Omega, but instead of using the power alone, he distributed it among all the participants, both heroes and villains. Now, Superman has disappeared, leaving everyone with superpowers to figure out their next move.
The Justice League Invites Villains to Prepare for Darkseid’s Next Attack

Okay, so I just finished reading Justice League Unlimited #17, and wow, it starts with a seriously intense scene! We jump right into the action with a hostage situation in Bialya, but the heroes arriving to save the day aren’t who you’d expect – it’s Lex Luthor, Starro, and Giganta! Thankfully, most of the issue is a flashback, taking us back 72 hours before that crazy moment, right after the events of DC K.O. It’s cool seeing all the heroes who were involved return, although it’s a bummer that Superman isn’t around for this one.
The heroes who were fighting returned and told those who stayed behind that Superman had won. He used his immense power – specifically, the power of King Omega – to fix the damage Darkseid caused and send him further into the future. They also explained that Superman shared some of this power, giving each hero a glimpse of what they need to do to defeat Darkseid when he inevitably returns. These visions have sparked realizations among the heroes, leading Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Captain to discuss them privately.
It was incredible watching Batman, Wonder Woman, and Captain Marvel venture into the Phantom Zone, a place where the League tries to rehabilitate villains. They all realized something profound – that to face future threats, they needed to rethink how they approached their enemies. I was really struck by Batman admitting his own biases and turning to Diana and Billy for guidance. He actually asked if they should offer full amnesty to the villains from the DC K.O. battle! And then, unbelievably, it happened – Giganta, Harley Quinn, Lobo, King Shark, and even Lex Luthor were offered membership, becoming part of Justice League Unlimited. It’s a bold move, and honestly, I’m excited to see how it plays out.
Is This the Start of a New Era of the Justice League?

I initially felt the League had already broadened its scope by including all kinds of heroes, but now they’re really pushing boundaries by adding villains! It’s not all villains, and with good reason. Villains like Lex Luthor and Harley Quinn witnessed the high stakes in DC K.O., and they shared the heroes’ visions of a troubling future. The League isn’t simply trusting these former enemies; they recognize a mutual understanding of the serious threat facing the DC Universe.
It’s fair to question whether this is the best move. The Justice League understandably wants to be as prepared as possible for Darkseid’s return, and the idea of giving villains a chance to redeem themselves is appealing. However, given how comics often revert to the same old patterns, it’s hard to believe this will actually lead to lasting change. Lex Luthor just finished a redemption arc recently, so it’s difficult to have confidence this one will be any different.
Things are really tense in the DC Universe right now. With Superman gone and the League on edge, everyone knows Darkseid will return eventually, and they need all the assistance they can get. Some villains might actually want to turn over a new leaf after the events of DC K.O., but it’s hard to say who can be trusted. Will anyone genuinely accept a chance at redemption, or will this be exploited to harm the League? It’s a risky move for the team, and hopefully it will be worth it.
