Frank Grillo, the 60-year-old actor, was surprised by the response of fans regarding his look in the movie “Superman.” Unlike most stars in this film, Grillo is not making his debut in the DC Universe; he previously portrayed Rick Flag Sr., sporting gray and white hair in “Creature Commandos.” However, in “Superman,” Flag appears with black hair, which contradicts the chronology of events as we know “Creature Commandos” came before “Superman.” In an interview with IGN over the weekend for the premiere of “Superman,” Grillo explained that he had to keep his hair black for another role he was shooting simultaneously with “Superman.” He mentioned, though, that he anticipates his hair to be white when he next appears in a live-action role within the DC Universe.
As a movie critic looking ahead to future projects, I foresee myself sporting white locks the next time I grace the screen, should they not dismiss me first. Recently, I found myself immersed in the world of “Tulsa King,” and let me tell you, it was one continuous shoot that left no room for a breather! So much so, I couldn’t even imagine changing my hair color during the production.
Interestingly enough, the online community has shown a certain disdain towards my dark tresses in the past, but I must admit it hasn’t exactly dampened my spirits.
In the comments section, some readers noted that Flag appeared to have suffered severe injuries at the end of Creature Commandos, and his swift recovery in the subsequent story seemed somewhat extraordinary. Yet, others suggested this could be rationalized by his ability to receive cutting-edge medical care being unparalleled on earth. Currently, Flag holds a key position within A.R.G.U.S., a covert government agency responsible for initiatives such as Task Force M. On screen, he is portrayed as a high-ranking military general in Superman.
The controversy surrounding Grillo’s hairstyle dates back several months, as people first noticed him in a Superman trailer towards the end of 2024. Fans were unsettled by any discrepancy so early in the DCU, regardless of how insignificant it was. This reflects the deep scars left by past disappointments and the desperate desire for a victory this time. Fortunately, Grillo’s hairstyle doesn’t appear to have significantly affected the movie’s success – it grossed $217 million in its opening weekend, and reviews from critics have been largely favorable.
In the near future, Flag will reappear within the DC Universe, providing us an opportunity to verify if Grillo was truthful about his claims. He’s scheduled to show up in “Peacemaker” Season 2, which debuts on HBO Max on August 21st. You can catch Season 1 of “Peacemaker” streaming there right now, and “Superman” is currently playing in cinemas nationwide.
