Okay, so the new Dungeons & Dragons book is almost here, and I’m super hyped! It’s bringing back Ravenloft, which is a classic horror setting – think gothic castles, creepy monsters, and really atmospheric campaigns. It’s not just a return to that world though, they’re also updating the 5.5e rules. The Domains of Dread are seriously cool to explore, but what’s really grabbed me is the news about new ways to build my character. It looks like they’re letting us create some truly unique heroes – or villains – for these darker, more personalized campaigns. I can’t wait to dive in!
Since 2024, the updated rules often called “5.5e” have been gradually changing D&D, significantly improving the 5th Edition. This includes improvements to character classes and subclasses. Many of these reworked and entirely new subclasses first appeared in the D&D Unearthed Arcana playtest program, letting players test them out. Books like Ravenloft: The Horrors Within then officially publish some of these playtested subclasses, incorporating feedback to make them polished and reliable options for players.
Ravenloft: The Horrors Within Adds Seven Subclasses Into Official Content Through Its Gameplay Expansion

The Ravenloft setting introduces 16 unique Domains of Dread, along with seven new character subclasses for use in any D&D 5th Edition (or 5.5e) game. These subclasses include both familiar favorites from the original 5th Edition and exciting new options for players to explore. The Ravenloft: The Horrors Within book officially adds these subclasses to the available character choices.
- Shadow Sorcerer
- College of Spirits Bard
- Undead Patron Warlock
- Phantom Rogue
- Reanimator Artificer
- Grave Domain Cleric
- Hollow Warden Ranger
These character options first appeared in a “Horror” themed playtest released almost a year ago, with the Hexblade Warlock being the only one not included. Some, like the Reanimator Artificer and Hollow Warden Rangers, are completely new to D&D. Others, such as the Shadow Sorcerer, Phantom Rogue, and Undead Warlock, have appeared in previous D&D expansions within alternative settings and supplemental books.
These character options were initially released as previews before being fully developed in the Ravenloft: The Horrors Within book. While some details will likely change in the new edition, the fundamental ideas will stay consistent. Players who enjoyed the original versions of these archetypes will find the updates revitalizing and engaging, making them suitable for any Dungeons & Dragons campaign, not just those set in the Domains of Dread.
Darker Character Builds Are Finally Possible Beyond Inconsistent Playtest Material

Refining the Horror subclasses into official options will give players many ways to create unique and compelling characters. Each archetype offers a distinct playstyle and inspiring themes for developing rich character backgrounds. These subclasses will be especially fitting for adventures in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, seamlessly integrating into that setting’s dark atmosphere.
The updated subclasses in the book feature both familiar abilities and exciting new ones, drawing on what players loved from earlier versions of 5th Edition D&D. For instance, the College of Spirits Bard can once again perform a seance, summoning a random spirit to grant unique bonuses. These bonuses combine elements from the subclass’s original design, previous playtest material, and further refinements made in the latest version of the book.
These subclass updates have the potential to make each archetype truly shine, especially now that we’re seeing how they work with the new 5.5e rules. From the Grave Cleric’s curses to the Phantom Rogue’s soul trinkets, each ability has been improved through playtesting since the initial horror-themed playtest material was released. These subclasses have gone through several revisions to address any issues with the transition from 5e to 5.5e, resulting in a more balanced and enjoyable experience for players of the expanded game.
While the Hexblade Warlock isn’t officially part of the subclasses in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, the updates from the Horror Unearthed Arcana are a standout feature of this new Dungeons & Dragons book. These improved horror-themed character options are expected to become official for the 5.5 edition of D&D, making them available for players in future campaigns.
