Will Smith is known for starring in many successful action and science fiction movies, and one of his biggest hits was 2007’s I Am Legend. The film, which featured Smith as the last person alive on Earth, received good reviews and earned over $585 million worldwide. While I Am Legend works well as a complete story on its own, a sequel has been planned for years. Now, almost 20 years after the first movie came out, I Am Legend 2 is finally moving forward with development.
Steven Caple Jr. recently told Collider that he will be directing I Am Legend 2. Currently, there’s no information available about when the movie might be made or released.
When Will I Am Legend 2 Release?

The sequel to I Am Legend is still in the very beginning stages of production. While the film has been discussed for a long time, it’s only recently found a director, Francis Lawrence, who previously worked with Michael B. Jordan on Creed II. Lawrence mentioned in an interview with Collider that he’s currently working on other projects for Paramount. Since I Am Legend 2 is with Warner Bros., it’s unclear which project will move forward first. One of those Paramount films could potentially delay I Am Legend 2.
Before Akiva Goldsman joined the project, Will Smith shared some initial ideas for I Am Legend 2. He mentioned that his character would lead a community of survivors, which proved that he wouldn’t be playing Robert Neville’s son, as some fans had guessed. It’s unclear how much of a script existed at that point, but now that Goldsman is involved, the story might change, allowing him to add his own ideas. Unlike the first film, which was based on a well-known novel, I Am Legend 2 doesn’t have any existing source material, so the writers need to carefully develop the screenplay and ensure the story is compelling.
Despite being busy with other projects, Warner Bros. is likely to quickly begin production on I Am Legend 2. Michael B. Jordan recently won Best Actor for his role in the hit movie Sinners, solidifying his status as a leading actor. Warner Bros., which also produced Sinners, would want to take advantage of his current success by quickly developing a sequel to I Am Legend featuring two Academy Award winners. It’s common for studios to move quickly when an actor is at the peak of their popularity, and with 19 years having passed since the original film, Jordan’s star power is currently at an all-time high.
Okay, so even if everything starts falling into place quickly for I Am Legend 2, I’m guessing we’re still a year or two away from actually seeing it in theaters. Warner Bros. didn’t mention anything about it at CinemaCon, which makes me think it’s not coming super soon. Of course, that could change if the script gets finalized! It’s good to know it’s still moving forward, though. Honestly, it’s been talked about for so long, I was starting to worry they’d given up on it completely, but thankfully that doesn’t seem to be happening.
