D&D’s Latest Unearthed Arcana Updates Iconic Subclasses for 5e

Many players are now acquainted with the updated rules for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition released in 2024. However, Wizards of the Coast is far from finished adding new content. While we’ve already seen a lot of new material this year, they’re already working on projects for 2026. It’s been a while since we’ve had an inside look, but a new ‘Unearthed Arcana‘ document has just been released, giving us a preview of what’s coming next for D&D 5e.

Recent Dungeons & Dragons playtest materials, released through Unearthed Arcana, have mostly updated existing content. This includes new versions of Arcane Subclasses and Psions, which are expected to be released soon. While some fans speculate this could signal a return to the Dark Sun setting, Wizards of the Coast hasn’t confirmed anything. However, D&D Beyond did add revised versions of classic subclasses for playtesting on October 30th.

New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Features Revised Subclasses for Barbarians, Fighters, Monks, and Paladins

The newest Dungeons & Dragons playtest material, called Unearthed Arcana, is now available for free download on D&D Beyond. You’ll be able to find the playtest document in the archives later, but the survey for providing feedback will only be open for a limited time. The survey will launch on November 6th, so be sure to check back then to share your thoughts on these updated character options. Let’s explore what’s included in these new playtest materials!

So, Wizards of the Coast dropped a new Unearthed Arcana, and this one’s all about subclasses! They’ve really been working on revamping things, especially for the Barbarian – it feels like they’ve given it a major overhaul. This playtest document includes updated versions of five different subclasses, and I’m excited to see what’s changed.

  • Barbarian – Path of the Spiritual Guardian (formerly Path of the Ancestral Guardian)
  • Barbarian – Path of the Storm Herald
  • Fighter – Cavalier
  • Monk – Warrior of Intoxication (formerly Way of the Drunken Master)
  • Paladin – Oathbreaker

All of the character class options from previous editions of Dungeons & Dragons have been updated to work with the revised rules in the 2024 Player’s Handbook. The Barbarian classes have received the most significant changes, with several adjustments to make them balanced for the new edition. However, every class has seen some updates – for example, the Monk subclass known as the Warrior of Intoxication can now create magical potions, and the Oathbreaker is now an additional subclass you can take alongside your existing one.

These updates are probably just the beginning, and we plan to feature these character options in future books. We have more content planned for 2025, and we’ll start working on projects for 2026 and beyond soon. If you’d like to help us develop these character options for future releases, please review them and complete the survey when it launches on November 6th.

These character options might change slightly when they’re officially released. However, you can still ask your Dungeon Master if you can continue using this early version for your own games.

Hey everyone, I’m really curious to hear your thoughts on the recent changes to the D&D subclasses! What are you all thinking? Let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – jump in and share your opinions!
