Dead Mortal Kombat Villain’s Future Addressed After Skipping Sequel

The new movie, Mortal Kombat II, is a thrilling and action-packed sequel to the 2021 film that brought the franchise back to life. It’s full of unexpected moments – characters die, then come back, and some familiar faces don’t appear at all. One notable absence in particular prompted a lead actor to suggest that anything is possible in the world of Mortal Kombat.

The second Mortal Kombat movie leaned more into the series’ signature fighting style and focused on new lead characters: Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, and Kitana, played by Adeline Rudolph. Rudolph recently told The Hollywood Reporter she’d love to see Mileena, Kitana’s sister and a clone of her, return in a potential third movie. Despite Mileena’s fate in the first film, Rudolph believes a return is definitely possible.

Regarding Mileena’s absence and her potential storylines, and whether Jade was intended to take her place as Kitana’s rival, Rudolph explained that he doesn’t believe Jade is a replacement. He pointed out that Kitana is over 10,000 years old, meaning a significant amount of time could have passed between the movie’s opening and her adult years. This leaves plenty of opportunity for Mileena to have her own story arc with Kitana, so he’s keeping that possibility open. He emphasized that Jade is a unique character and no one is being replaced.

The story of Mortal Kombat II revolves around John Cage, who initially declines to help defend Earthrealm from the ruthless Shao Kahn. He eventually joins forces with Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, and Raiden to fight for Earthrealm’s freedom. Meanwhile, Kitana struggles with her allegiance as her mother, Sindel, is resurrected as Shao Kahn’s undead wife. Fans are anticipating the return of even more characters in the third film, whether they’re newcomers or brought back from the dead.
