Demi Lovato Reveals Where Her Friendship With Selena Gomez Stands

Demi Lovato‘s bond with Selena Gomez is anything but ordinary.

Demi Lovato and her Princess Protection Program co-star have been friends for over twenty years, and she recently talked about what it was like navigating Hollywood together as they both started their careers.

Demi explained on the March 3rd episode of the Baby, This is Keke Palmer podcast that she and Selena had been friends even before Disney Channel. They actually appeared on the show Barney together, which gave Demi a sense of comfort and security when she joined Disney Channel, knowing she already had a friend there.

The 33-year-old, who worked with Selena on a children’s TV show for two seasons between 2002 and 2004, said they are incredibly thankful for their ongoing friendship.

However, growing up in the spotlight wasn’t simple, particularly while Demi was on Sonny With a Chance and Selena was on Wizards of Waverly Place.

She explained that growing up was tough because she often felt compared to others, which made her self-conscious. This led her to compare herself to everyone else, but her mom taught her a valuable lesson: there’s enough space for everyone to succeed, and life isn’t a competition.

Her mother, Dianna De La Garza, remembered telling her, ‘You need to stay true to yourself and follow your own path.’ This advice, she said, helped her through a difficult time, and she always wanted to support everyone around her.

She continues to be a devoted supporter of Selena, and has consistently praised her recent successes, even through the challenges their friendship has faced. This includes celebrating Selena’s new album, I Said I Love You First, created with her husband, Benny Blanco.

Demi, who married Jordan “Jutes” Lutes last May, said she was thrilled for the other person and wished them all the best. She shared this on the talk show Watch What Happens Live in September.

She said she really enjoyed the album, praising it as a “really, really great job.” She especially loved the song ‘Bluest Flame,’ calling it her favorite.

Demi and Selena are just one example of a lasting Hollywood connection. Here are some other celebrity friendships we love.

I’ve been a huge fan of my sister-in-law’s films for years, so when I finally got the chance, I asked her if she’d recreate some of my favorite scenes with me. We even did one from My Best Friend’s Wedding, which was amazing!

During a May 2024 appearance on the Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino podcast, she recounted telling Cameron, ‘I need you to run towards me from behind the luggage cart, towards the airport.’ She explained that she was directing Cameron, essentially telling her what to say while they were driving, and Cameron willingly complied. She described Cameron’s cooperation as incredibly generous.

Thankfully, Lawrence was free to spend time with Schumer, otherwise they might have missed out on a really special friendship. It all started when the Oscar-winning Lawrence emailed Schumer after seeing her 2015 movie, Trainwreck. She confessed to Schumer, “I don’t even know where to begin. I guess I should just say it: I’m in love with you!” They began emailing back and forth, which quickly turned into texting.

But their friendship really took off when Schumer casually invited Lawrence to join her and her high school friends for a trip to the Hamptons. Schumer was surprised when Lawrence said yes, but quickly realized how down-to-earth she was. As Schumer put it, Lawrence is “the coolest person you’ll ever meet” and felt like one of the group right away.

Everyone would want a friend who’s successful enough to own property nearby! Jennifer Lopez and Sofia Vergara have been incredibly close ever since they met and instantly connected at the premiere of Man on Fire in 2004. Lopez described it as an immediate spark – feeling like she loved and enjoyed being around Vergara, and that she always made her laugh.

Vergara was also enthusiastically cheering on Lopez when she performed at President Joe Biden’s inauguration. She messaged Lopez, reminding her of her Bronx roots and saying that the performance was truly inspiring and beautiful to watch, according to TopMob News.

Considered the ultimate celebrity friendship, these three have been incredibly close ever since they first bonded while working on the Warner Brothers lot. According to a source, their shared experience on the hit show Friends created a strong foundation for their bond. Just like staying in touch with former coworkers, they prioritize getting together – whether it’s for casual happy hours or larger reunions. The source notes that it’s easy for them to connect, with regular Sunday dinners at Courteney’s or pool parties at Jennifer’s, and that they remain incredibly close and will continue to be.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have been incredibly close friends ever since they met in an improv class in 1993, and they consider each other family. Poehler, who has one younger brother named Greg, told PopSugar while promoting their 2015 movie Sisters that she and Fey are like chosen sisters, giving her a family connection she hadn’t experienced before.

Philipps described meeting Williams on the set of Dawson’s Creek as love at first sight. They quickly became friends and shared a natural connection, bonding over things like drinking wine, smoking, and even getting into trouble. She said that instant affection has lasted for years. Luckily for fans, we get a glimpse into their life together – from walking red carpets in matching outfits to Williams’ occasional, perfectly-colored pink hair.

Drake and Adele, despite only recently considering a partnership, are clearly eager to work together. After years of admiring each other’s music – they’ve collectively won 19 Grammy Awards – they started talking about a possible collaboration. Adele mentioned to etalk that she’d love to create an official remix with Drake, adding that she’s a huge fan – she even bought the red coat he wore in his music video! Drake reciprocated, jokingly offering to do anything for Adele, even laundry. Instead of immediately recording, they spent time together grabbing a meal and going bowling, hinting at future plans.

As a mother of two, Washington always wants to support other women, remembering how much help she received during her own pregnancies. She told Entertainment Tonight that she makes an effort to have open and honest conversations, especially with close friend Eva Longoria. Longoria greatly appreciated Washington’s support when she welcomed her son, Santiago, in 2018, playfully calling Washington “basically my doula.”

After winning an Academy Award over 20 years ago for Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have teamed up again for the film The Last Duel. Despite spending some time apart, their close friendship remains strong. Damon explained to Entertainment Tonight that they’ve known each other for 35 years and grew up together, sharing a mutual passion for acting and filmmaking. He believes this shared obsession during their younger years created a lifelong bond.

The friendship between these two influential television personalities began in 1976 while they worked at a Baltimore TV station. Though Oprah Winfrey was an anchor and Gayle King a production assistant, and they didn’t usually mix socially due to the workplace structure, a snowstorm brought them closer. Oprah invited Gayle, who earned $12,000 a year as a PA, to stay with her. The next day, they went shopping together at the mall, and a lasting friendship blossomed over sweaters at Casual Corner.

While your dates probably don’t involve Wimbledon finals or palace visits, Meghan Markle and a certain tennis star actually connected in a very relatable way. They first met at a 2014 Super Bowl event and instantly bonded. As Meghan wrote on her now-defunct website, The Tig, they spent the time taking pictures, laughing during a flag football game, and chatting about everyday things – not tennis or acting, but typical ‘girly stuff’.

Even though Game of Thrones has ended, the close bond between Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams remains strong. Williams, who was a bridesmaid at Turner’s wedding to Joe Jonas in 2019, believes the most valuable outcome of the show’s eight seasons wasn’t its 12 Emmy Awards. She playfully told TopMob News at the final season premiere that the show felt like an elaborate plan to help her find a best friend. “It’s been incredible,” she added, “and having a friend like Sophie during something as intense as Game of Thrones was a true blessing.”

Okay, let’s talk about something genuinely heartwarming! I think everyone’s heart just melted when that video went viral of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds reacting to their daughter James recognizing Taylor Swift’s “Gorgeous” at a concert! Blake actually called it embarrassing, but sweetly explained to Robin Roberts on Good Morning America that it was just pure, unfiltered pride – and who can’t relate to that as a parent? But beyond the adorable moments, what I truly love is the genuine friendship between these families. From their Fourth of July celebrations at Taylor’s place to cozy getaways at Blake and Ryan’s country home, and even those fun cameos in Taylor’s music videos, it’s a bond that feels so real and deserves to be cherished. It’s a beautiful thing to witness!

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon have a friendship that goes way back, even before their Apple TV+ series, The Morning Show. They first acted together in 2000, playing sisters on an NBC show. Witherspoon, who had recently given birth to her daughter Ava Phillippe, remembers being 23 and nursing on set. She recalled Aniston repeatedly asking about the baby, which felt strange at the time. Witherspoon would explain she was pumping breast milk, and Aniston was incredibly kind and supportive. They’ve been close friends ever since that experience.

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg have an unlikely but captivating friendship that began at Justin Bieber’s Comedy Central Roast in 2015. It blossomed into a VH1 cooking show, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. Snoop Dogg explained to LA Weekly that Martha is different from people he’s usually around, but also surprisingly relatable. He appreciates that she’s genuine and down-to-earth, despite coming from a different generation. He feels a strong connection with her because she’s straightforward and doesn’t shock him, making their collaboration feel natural and almost like a perfect match – ‘holy matrimony,’ not ‘holy macaroni.’
