I’ve been watching the buzz around *Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle*, which just hit theaters across the US. It really dives into the tragic backstory of one of the anime’s main villains. This movie is the first of three planned films that will cover the ‘Infinity Castle’ story arc from the original manga. It seems like we’re now seeing the final showdown between the remaining Demon Slayers and Muzan Kibutsuji’s forces, and it’s going to be tough – expect some really painful losses on both sides.
The new movie, *Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle*, kicks off a series of major battles, starting with a showdown between Tanjiro Kamado, Giyu Tomioka, and the powerful demon Akaza (Upper Rank Three). The fight culminates in a surprising and deeply emotional reveal about Akaza’s past – a backstory that many fans will find even more heartbreaking than previous flashbacks in the series. Be warned: Spoilers ahead!
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Shows Akaza’s Heartbreaking Origin
As a huge Demon Slayer fan, I was so hyped for *Infinity Castle*, and it really delivered with some incredible fights! While there were three major battles in this first film of the trilogy, the showdown with Akaza was definitely the most intense. We last saw Akaza going head-to-head with Rengoku in the *Mugen Train* movie, so I, like Tanjiro, was really eager to see this rematch. It was fascinating to learn that Akaza felt the same way, and Tanjiro actually triggered some forgotten memories in him – it was like he was remembering someone from his past, but couldn’t quite place who!
Even while battling Tanjiro and nearing defeat, Akaza recognizes a familiar personality in his opponent – one that reminds him of his former master. After his defeat, Akaza fully recalls his human life and his relationship with Keizo, a man who took him in and taught him how to fight. Voiced by Channing Tatum in the English dub, Keizo became a close friend to Akaza, offering him a sense of hope he hadn’t known before.
Why Akaza’s Origin Is So Heartbreaking

Akaza’s backstory reveals more than just his relationship with Keizo. We also learn about Koyuki, Keizo’s young and very sick daughter. Keizo asked Akaza to watch over her, and the two of them became close. They even fell in love, and Akaza looked forward to a happy future. Sadly, Keizo and Koyuki were poisoned by a rival dojo, leaving Akaza alone again.
Akaza had a difficult childhood, losing his father at a young age and developing a pessimistic view of the world. This negativity intensified after witnessing more deaths, leading him to a violent outburst where he killed everyone at his dojo. Facing execution, he was saved by Muzan, who turned him into a demon. For centuries, Akaza fought to become stronger, but only when he was nearing the end did he understand his original motivation: to protect the people he cared about. It’s a tragic story that reveals a complete and poignant turnaround in his perspective.
