Ufotable, an animation studio founded in 2000, has created a number of distinctive anime series and films. While already respected within the industry, Ufotable wasn’t as widely known as established studios like Toei Animation or newer successes like MAPPA (known for hits such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan). Though Demon Slayer brought Ufotable international fame, the studio first made a name for itself with series like Fate/Zero and The Garden of Sinners.
Ufotable has become increasingly popular, and is now famous as the animation studio behind the all-time highest-grossing anime film, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. Though they don’t produce many anime each year, everything Ufotable creates is known for its stunning animation. The studio is currently working on a few exciting projects, one of which is Witch on the Holy Night. This upcoming anime film is based on a visual novel by Type-Moon, and a new teaser visual has just been released, hinting at its 2026 premiere.
What Is Witch on the Holy Night About?
Kinoko Nasu, known for creating works like Garden of Sinners and Fate, originally set this story in the 1980s, making it the earliest tale in the Type-Moon universe. The story centers around an old mansion in Misaki Town, said to be inhabited by a witch. There, Aoko Aozaki studies magic under Alice Kuonji, who is believed to live in the mansion. Aoko’s family owns the land the town stands on, and as the only heir, she’s tasked with defending it from any danger.
When strange intruders disturb the peace of their town, Alice and Aoko begin investigating. After defeating a mysterious puppet with magic and witnessing a young boy see the whole thing, the boy becomes connected to both the mansion and the world of magic. The girls continue their search for the intruder, and the story reveals the backstory of Aoko Aozaki, a key character from the game Tsukihime. This visual novel serves as a prequel to Tsukihime, focusing on the origins of Shiki Tohno’s teacher.
This year in February, the movie announced it will come out in 2026. A short, 34-second trailer showed off the two main characters and the important location where the story takes place. While a specific date hasn’t been announced yet, it will likely first be released in Japan in 2026. Anime films usually become available worldwide, including in the U.S., a few months after their initial release in Japan, so we can anticipate a global release soon after that.
