The success of the Demon Slayer series, created by Ufotable from Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga, can be largely attributed to its thrilling battle sequences. This show, along with popular ongoing series such as One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Solo Leveling, has found a significant place in the hearts of many. While One Piece captivates audiences with the enigma of its titular MacGuffin, Jujutsu Kaisen keeps them on their toes with constant plot twists, and Solo Leveling exudes an “aura,” Demon Slayer is celebrated for its exceptional and high-energy fight scenes.
Throughout its four seasons and the “Mugen Train” film, fans have been thrilled by some remarkable battles in Demon Slayer. The fights in the “Mugen Train” and Entertainment District arcs are often considered the most spectacular animated battles of the show so far, with Tanjiro and the Hashiras engaging Muzan’s Upper Rank demons. Yet, these aren’t the best battle in Demon Slayer. In fact, an outstanding fight occurred earlier in the series that might take you by surprise.
Demon Slayer’s Best Fight Happened in Season 1
If you haven’t yet re-watched the series before its September 12th premiere of Infinity Castle, let me remind you of the opening episode from the first season. After discovering his family butchered by a demon, leaving Nezuko barely alive with demonic blood coursing through her veins, Tanjiro rushes to save her. However, his quest is interrupted when he encounters Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira. Thinking Nezuko to be a demon, Giyu tries to eliminate her, but Tanjiro bravely defends his sister and confronts the famed Hashira instead.
In this particular “Demon Slayer” encounter, the battle between Tanjiro and Giyu deviates from the norm. Unlike other fights, there are no spectacular breathing techniques or Blood Demon Arts on display here. To put it frankly, the exchange resembles more of a discussion than an actual fight. Given that during the Hashira Training Arc, Tanjiro would struggle against Giyu, it’s safe to say that episode 1 Tanjiro had no chance. However, their vastly different power levels added an intriguing layer to the encounter. Despite knowing his own weakness, Tanjiro was still able to surprise Giyu.
Following repeated falls and pleading for mercy for Nezuko, Tanjiro executed one final attack. He circled around Giyu and eventually rushed at him, only to be knocked down again. However, as Tanjiro found himself on the icy ground, his axe soared through the air, having been thrown while running, aimed at Giyu’s head.
Instead of using “fight” or “battle,” which might imply multiple strategies or prolonged conflict, one could say that the scene in question is more accurately described as a singular, powerful demonstration. This particular scene, in Demon Slayer‘s anime, captivated millions of viewers and, to be honest, no subsequent scenes have matched its impact since.
Why Demon Slayer‘s First Fight Is So Good
Compared to the intense battles between characters like Tengen against Daki and Gyutaro, or Rengoku versus Akaza in Demon Slayer, the encounter between Tanjiro and Giyu may not be as visually stunning or spectacular. However, what sets this battle apart is the element of strategy and intelligence, a trait that has been less prevalent in many previous Demon Slayer fights.
Despite the thrilling fight sequences in Demon Slayer, they often devolve into a test of endurance rather than a showcase of skill or finesse. The combat has transitioned more towards raw power and perseverance. This is what sets the battle between Tanjiro and Giyu apart. Without any formal training, Tanjiro must use his intellect to strategize and find a way to defeat Giyu and save his sister. Even spectators are taken aback by Tanjiro’s cunning maneuver, making his character endearing and leaving us eager for the next action scene.
Beyond showcasing a skillfully crafted battle scene, that particular instance further solidified Tanjiro’s character. Since his debut, he has consistently demonstrated a selfless willingness to put others ahead of himself. His remarkable resilience, having endured severe injuries like being stabbed in the face yet persisting in combat, is now well-known enough to inspire memes. This trait, however, was evident from the outset of the series.
Some viewers have expressed a concern that the fight sequences in “Demon Slayer” may not be as engaging as they once were. Although the production values and animation quality seem to have escalated dramatically, it appears that the combat choreography has shifted from intelligent battles to more simplified ones, featuring excessive sword-swinging and random usage of breathing techniques for victory. While these later fights might appear more visually appealing, many believe they don’t match the excellence displayed in the opening episode.
