The popular sci-fi series everyone’s been waiting for is returning to streaming before its next installment is released.
Director Denis Villeneuve achieved something remarkable in 2021 by bringing a famously difficult science fiction novel to life on the big screen. The film was a huge success, both financially and critically, receiving numerous award nominations and becoming a major topic online. He followed that up in 2023 with a second film that was even more popular than the first, proving his initial success wasn’t a fluke. The third and possibly final Dune movie is coming out later this year, and the first two films are currently gaining renewed attention on streaming services.
Both Dune and Dune: Part Two are now available to stream on HBO Max, and viewers are rediscovering why Denis Villeneuve’s films are considered classics. The two movies have recently climbed the streaming charts, proving their enduring appeal. While Sinners currently holds the number one spot, Dune and Dune: Part Two are quickly gaining popularity. As of today, Dune is the sixth most-watched movie on the platform this week, with Dune: Part Two right behind it at number seven.
Denis Villeneuve’s films have adapted Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel Dune in two parts. The first film, Dune, introduced the desert planet Arrakis, the conflict between the Atreides and Harkonnen families, and Paul’s destiny as foretold in numerous prophecies. Dune: Part Two showed Paul gaining the trust of the Fremen people and then using their beliefs to reclaim Arrakis and challenge the Emperor. The upcoming Dune: Part Three will be based on Herbert’s second book, Dune: Messiah, though it will likely take some liberties with the original story.
The ‘Dune’ Trilogy Will Soon Come to an End
The initial trailer for Dune: Part Three has fans incredibly excited. The movie brings back the entire original cast – including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Javier Bardem – and adds new stars like Anya Taylor-Joy, Isaach De Bankole, and Robert Pattinson. Jason Momoa is also returning for this third installment.
Villeneuve’s sci-fi series, starting with Dune, was always planned as a trilogy. While Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two cover the first novel, Dune: Part Three will conclude the story with the events of Messiah, leaving out the remaining books in Frank Herbert’s Dune saga.
Denis Villeneuve Is Right Not to Adapt ‘Dune’s Other Books

Warner Bros. Pictures
Frank Herbert created the popular Dune series. After he passed away in 1986, his son, Brian Herbert, continued writing the Dune novels. While the books began to decline in quality after Messiah, Brian Herbert’s later works didn’t quite capture the magic of the original Dune. Director Denis Villeneuve has already taken liberties with the source material in his film adaptations, and adapting Frank and Brian Herbert’s other novels to fit the realistic style of Villeneuve’s Dune would require significant revisions.
