With many exciting science fiction movies coming out this year, Project Hail Mary is highly anticipated. Based on the popular novel by Andy Weir, author of The Martian, the film stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a science teacher on a mission to save the planet. Leading up to the release, Amazon MGM Studios has created a strong marketing campaign showcasing the film’s impressive visuals and moving story, making it look like a film best experienced in theaters. They recently generated a lot of buzz with the final trailer and a commercial during the Super Bowl.
The latest promotional materials for Project Hail Mary continue to show why the film could be something truly remarkable. However, the final trailer sparked some debate. Unlike earlier previews that only offered glimpses of Rocky, the alien Ryland befriends, the new trailer focuses on him more directly, giving audiences a clearer picture of his role. While some viewers might have preferred to learn more about Rocky during the movie, Amazon made the correct choice by showcasing him now.
Ryland’s Friendship With Rocky Is the Heart of Project Hail Mary

Movie trailers are mainly designed to attract a general audience and convince them to see a film. While dedicated movie fans already know about upcoming releases, most people first learn about a movie through its trailer. Trailers need to quickly explain what a film is about and create excitement. That’s why some viewers are puzzled by the marketing for The Mandalorian & Grogu; the ads haven’t clearly explained why it’s a must-see in theaters.
It was a smart move to keep Rocky a secret in the early trailers for Project Hail Mary. The idea of a regular science teacher unexpectedly tasked with saving Earth is interesting enough to draw viewers in. By holding back on revealing Rocky, the story could build excitement naturally. Now that the movie’s release is near, it’s time to showcase Rocky as a central character. He’s much more than just a brief encounter for Ryland; he’s a key part of the story. Like Ryland, Rocky is also trying to save his home planet, and the two form a surprising connection as they work together.
What truly makes Project Hail Mary stand out is Rocky. The connection between Ryland and Rocky is the heart of the film, and the trailer should emphasize this. Showing Rocky highlights that this isn’t just another story about someone surviving alone in space. It’s a buddy movie – from the team behind some of the best comedies in recent years – but set against a massive, sci-fi backdrop. The emotional impact of the film will come more from the relationship between Ryland and Rocky than from the dangers of the mission itself. Giving audiences a glimpse of Rocky now will let them connect with the alien character early on, and build excitement for the full movie.
While it might have been possible to promote Project Hail Mary without heavily featuring Rocky, the current strategy of highlighting the bond between Ryland and Rocky has clearly captured audiences. Short clips of them collaborating and overcoming challenges – like learning to communicate – have built anticipation for the film. Ultimately, this final trailer revealed the heart of Project Hail Mary: a classic sci-fi story about unlikely allies working together for the good of humanity.
The Project Hail Mary Trailers Are Great Even With the Rocky Spoilers

As a huge fan, I have to say the final trailer for Project Hail Mary was really well done! Amazon didn’t give everything away, which I appreciated. It showed just enough to get me totally hooked without spoiling the whole story. Even after watching, I still have so many questions – especially if you haven’t read the book! – like, what actually happens to Ryland and Rocky? There are some genuinely moving moments in the trailer that really highlight how much danger they’re in. Honestly, after seeing it, I’m even more excited to see the movie and find out what happens to them both. It’s definitely going to pull sci-fi fans in!
Even though it’s easier than ever to watch new movies at home, the trailers for Project Hail Mary really highlight why this one is worth seeing in a theater. The film is visually stunning and incredibly grand in scope, thanks in large part to cinematographer Greig Fraser. Fraser has a proven track record of creating immersive experiences in films like Dune, The Batman, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He’s one of the best at creating such large-scale visuals, and his work truly shines on the biggest screens – which is why Project Hail Mary is getting an IMAX release.
As a movie lover, I’m getting really excited about Project Hail Mary. Honestly, some films feel okay to wait for at home, but this doesn’t seem like one of them. The trailers are incredible – visually stunning and the story just feels special. It’s the kind of movie everyone will be talking about, and I have a feeling the early buzz is going to create a real ‘fear of missing out’ that drives people to see it in theaters. Amazon’s marketing has been spot-on, making a strong case that this could be one of the best films of 2026.
If you’re questioning Amazon’s marketing for Project Hail Mary, author Andy Weir offers a good point. He explained that showing glimpses of Rocky, the alien character, in earlier trailers was necessary because Rocky is so important to the story. It’s hard to promote a movie without revealing key plot points, and honestly, if Amazon had revealed more details, complaints would be understandable. But the trailer focusing on Rocky is actually another reason to look forward to the film.
