Although Bungie has stated they’re ending active development on Destiny 2, a recent report suggests they were exploring options to continue supporting the game. Forbes reports that Bungie began internal conversations about the future of Destiny 2 following the release of the Edge of Fate expansion.
The report indicates Bungie decided to stop supporting Destiny 2 earlier this year, but these discussions intensified after the release of Renegades. The expansion didn’t sell well, leading to debate about whether Bungie should move away from releasing two smaller expansions per year and return to its previous strategy of one large expansion with ongoing updates throughout the year.
The team also talked about Destiny 3, but it doesn’t look like Bungie plans to make it anytime soon. They also considered a large-scale update called Destiny Infinity. This wouldn’t have been a completely new game, but it would have released content at a similar pace to the expansions in the original Destiny and Destiny 2.
It’s kinda crazy, but it seems like Destiny‘s struggles weren’t just about its own recent issues. Apparently, Marathon flopping at launch really hurt too. Someone told me that if Marathon had been a massive hit – like, made a billion dollars – Destiny 2 might still be going strong. It’s like, maybe it could’ve gotten a second chance if another Bungie game had done better.
Players likely won’t be able to influence Bungie’s plans for the future of Destiny 2. According to reports, neither the player petition nor the planned increase in logins will change the current direction or lead to the development of Destiny 3. Right now, Bungie is focused on making their new game, Marathon, a success, and Season 2 of Destiny 2 will play a key role in that.
Earlier this month, Bungie announced that June 9th will be the release date for the last major update to Destiny 2. In a recent statement, the studio explained that after The Final Shape expansion, they’ll be moving beyond Destiny 2 to explore new possibilities for the Destiny universe. Although Bungie is stopping active development of the game, they confirmed that the online servers will remain active so players can continue playing.
Surprisingly, another report revealed that many developers at Bungie were also surprised when the company announced it would stop supporting Destiny 2. They were reportedly working on a new expansion, tentatively called Shattered Cycle, at the time. Employees who knew about the decision beforehand felt cut off and urged studio leaders to inform the rest of the team.
The recent Destiny 2 expansion, Renegades, didn’t do well with players or critics. We gave it a 6/10 in our review, finding that while it had interesting ideas inspired by Star Wars, those ideas felt forced at times. The expansion also felt repetitive due to similar tasks in the Lawless Frontier missions, and the new faction didn’t offer much beyond a few new merchants.
