Mobile gaming is booming, largely because smartphones are much more accessible than gaming consoles or powerful PCs. As a result, many popular game franchises are now available on mobile, though not all have been hits. Despite worries about adapting the popular *Destiny* series for mobile, *Destiny: Rising* has quickly become a big success. Recently, the team at ComicBook spoke with the game’s developers to learn about the making of this impressive title and what players can expect in the future.
Destiny: Rising is the first completely new game in the Destiny series in eight years. Some fans were worried about it becoming a free-to-play mobile game, but reviews and player feedback show that NetEase has successfully created a mobile version of Destiny. It captures the feel of the original games while also introducing new features and a compelling story that makes it stand out. The developers clearly put a lot of care and passion for the original Destiny games into this new installment.
Destiny Rising Places Characters and Players at the Center

As a huge Destiny fan, I was really excited to see what NetEase would do with the first mobile version of the game. They said they didn’t just want to recreate the original, but actually improve on it! That’s a bold claim, but honestly, after playing, I think they’ve actually pulled it off. It really *feels* like Destiny, and in some ways, it’s even better than I expected.
The team worked hard to perfect the basic controls and designed the gameplay for short bursts, understanding that mobile gamers often play in quick sessions while on the go. As a result, *Destiny: Rising* successfully brings the *Destiny* experience to mobile devices in a way that fits those shorter playstyles.
This intentional design choice allows players to easily start and stop playing without feeling lost. NetEase didn’t simply divide existing game content for mobile; they created entirely new content and gameplay modes specifically tailored for a mobile experience to keep players engaged.
The NetEase team explained that the biggest benefit of a mobile format is its portability. This allows players to easily team up with friends for quick activities like dungeons, and it’s perfect for more relaxed, everyday gameplay. Besides traditional combat, players of *Destiny: Rising* can also enjoy activities like decorating their personal space, challenging others to duels, or simply fishing.
NetEase clearly prioritized the player experience when developing Destiny: Rising, carefully considering how it could differ from the console and PC versions of Destiny. The goal was to create a game that offers a feeling of constant connection, freeing players from needing to be tied to a console or PC. And it succeeds, taking players back to a time before the Guardians we know. This allows NetEase to really focus on developing compelling characters, with the intention that “every Lightbearer should be memorable for our players.”
Each story within the game is carefully designed to be special and something the NetEase creative team-all dedicated Destiny fans themselves-truly loves. This approach works well for a mobile game because it breaks the larger story into smaller, focused character arcs, and it lets players really get to know and connect with characters they already enjoy.
What’s Coming Next for Destiny Rising

I had to ask the developers of *Destiny: Rising* about their plans for the future. A common concern among players is that games with in-game purchases might gradually reduce rewards to encourage spending. So, I asked the *Destiny: Rising* team about their approach to how they make money and how they handle in-game rewards, often called ‘gacha’ mechanics.
The team believes players should enjoy spending in the game and feel like it’s worth their money. When they created the gacha system for *Destiny: Rising*, they focused on being clear about how it works, making results feel predictable, and offering plenty of valuable rewards. They say they use these same ideas for all other ways players can spend money in the game.
Just because the game feels generous now doesn’t mean it will stay that way. However, it shows NetEase is trying to be more open about how they make money in their games. We’ve seen similar approaches in other free-to-play games they’ve made, such as *Marvel Rivals*.
I was curious about what’s coming up in *Destiny: Rising*, so I asked for some hints about future content. While the developers couldn’t share many details, I did get a small preview of what to expect in Seasons 2 and 3.
NetEase says players will receive frequent updates adding new characters and their backstories. The upcoming Season 2 will feature new dungeons, challenges, and events, and Season 3 promises even more content.
Even though you can still play through the current Season 1 content, NetEase is already preparing new things for *Destiny: Rising*, including fresh challenges and events. We can expect more opportunities to explore the characters and gameplay that make the mobile game so engaging. NetEase has indicated that this Season 2 content should arrive around November 2025.
Destiny: Rising is available as a free-to-play game on Android and iOS devices through the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. If you prefer to play on a computer, you can use the MuMuPlayer emulator. The game offers optional in-app purchases, including a gacha system for obtaining items.
