From a movie enthusiast’s perspective, it’s hard to contain my excitement as I ponder the imminent return of Michael C. Hall’s intriguing, ravenous serial killer, Dexter, on our screens in an entirely fresh format – the sequel series, “Dexter: Resurrection.” This time around, Dexter and Harrison Morgan, played by Jack Alcott, will be thrust into the vibrant chaos of New York City. The upcoming series promises a return of John Lithgow’s chilling Trinity Killer character, along with other familiar faces from the franchise. However, I can’t help but wonder about that intriguing standalone concept that was previously mentioned.
It’s been revealed that Clyde Phillips, who oversaw Dexter and currently runs Resurrection, has not faltered in the possibility of a spinoff focusing on Lithgow’s Arthur Mitchell, one of Dexter‘s most brutal antagonists. In fact, Phillips shared with Collider that the only obstacle preventing it from happening immediately is the absence of approval from the decision-makers. To quote him directly:
The script is fully penned down. John Lithgow has consented to lend his voice for narration, but as of now, it hasn’t been taken up. We’re optimistic that with the success of Resurrection and Original Sin recently being approved, Chris McCarthy and the Paramount team might consider expanding the Dexter universe. However, no decision has been made yet in this regard.
Discussing their conviction in the idea, Clyde Phillips & Co. didn’t just create an operational blueprint for the Trinity Killer’s rise to notoriety; they also wrote the entire script for it. If the approval from network executives isn’t forthcoming, this could be a significant risk or, alternatively, a substantial investment of time that might not bear fruit. However, let’s hope it won’t turn out that way.
Arthur Miller’s final episode in Season 4 of “Dexter” delivered one of the most stunning TV moments ever, impacting not just the show, but television as a whole. This climactic event dramatically altered Dexter’s life and that of his and Rita’s son. It’s reasonable to infer that he had similarly profound impacts on other families before this incident. Such themes seem fitting for the upcoming series, given its prequel nature.
In the series Dexter, Arthur’s lengthy career as a ruthless serial killer spanned three decades. Yet, he successfully portrayed himself as an adored high school teacher and church deacon in public life. Despite his cruel treatment of his family, he was considered a family man, though his perspective on families was markedly different from the norm. He traveled across the country carrying out his signature crimes while managing to avoid capture and identification. It seems that the creative team has a clear idea of where these criminal activities are taking place.
Will we get to see another awkward Thanksgiving dinner quite like this one, though?
There’s some uncertainty about whether John Lithgow himself will appear physically on the show or if he’ll only contribute through voiceovers and narration. Given that he’s slated to play Dumbledore in the new Harry Potter series, it seems likely that his schedule won’t allow him to accept many TV roles for now, as he might be quite busy.
As enthusiastic supporters, let’s keep our eyes glued to “Dexter: Resurrection” on Showtime and Paramount+. If we show them our unwavering interest, the decision-makers will undoubtedly understand the demand for a Trinity Killer spinoff. We don’t want this opportunity to slip through our fingers!
