Clyde Phillips, the creator of *Dexter: Original Sin*, has revealed that the show’s cancellation wasn’t managed effectively.
The show, a prequel to the original Dexter, was cancelled in August 2025, despite being renewed by Paramount just a few months earlier.
On the Dissecting Dexter podcast, showrunner Clyde Phillips expressed disappointment with how the prequel series was canceled. He had already told the cast and writers they were returning for another season, making the cancellation particularly frustrating.
“It was a tough phone call I got that night where they had already picked up the show,” he said.
Honestly, I was pretty frustrated with how things played out. I’d made sure everyone – the writers and actors – was on the same page, but then it felt like that groundwork was completely ignored. They jumped into ‘Resurrection’ quickly, which wasn’t unexpected, but the whole process just wasn’t managed well, and I’m definitely not pleased with the final result.
Shortly after Paramount and Skydance merged, the show Original Sin was cancelled after only one season.
According to Variety, a change in company leadership led to a review of planned projects. As a result, they cancelled *Original Sin* and decided to move forward with a second season of *Dexter: Resurrection* to keep the series going.
Phillips mentioned on the podcast that before the Skydance deal, the studio hoped to build a large franchise around *Dexter*, similar to *Yellowstone*. They envisioned Phillips taking on a role comparable to Taylor Sheridan’s – the creative force behind *Yellowstone* and its expanding universe.
Phillips had envisioned a significant future for the franchise, but those plans now seem to have been abandoned.
Despite previous issues, it looks like Dexter: Resurrection will continue with additional seasons, which should reassure fans who were worried about the show’s future.
