As I eagerly awaited the unfolding of the alternate reality saga in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, I couldn’t help but wonder if our beloved protagonist from the original series, Amuro Ray, would make a comeback in this new universe. Charismatic characters like Char Aznable and Lalah Sune certainly graced the screens, but the question on every fan’s lips was: “Where is Amuro?” Well, the grand finale has come and gone, leaving us with a slightly puzzling answer about Amuro’s whereabouts in this new world.
In summary, Amuro doesn’t show up in person or appear named in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Though fight scenes were shown with the RX-78-2 Gundam, the series never revealed Amuro inside the cockpit. Instead, another character, Shuji, piloted the RX-78-2 to destroy the Rose of Sharon and bring an end to the world. The show only vaguely hints at Amuro’s presence in the finale, possibly as a spirit.
Why Is Amuro Missing in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX

In contrast to the original Mobile Suit Gundam series’ Universal Century timeline, the alternate universe of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX presents some notable variations. One of the most significant alterations occurs when Char piloted the RX-78-2 mobile suit from Side 7 instead of Amuro Ray. The redesign of the RX-78-2 in this series is dramatically different from its traditional appearance. In the original series, Amuro Ray wielded the RX-78-2 against the Zeon Principality’s invasion of Side 7 to secure the Gundam. Despite his youth, Amuro Ray had latent Newtype abilities that included a heightened intuition and mild telepathic talents. He was the sole individual who operated the Gundam, as he had deciphered his father’s designs and blueprints for it. The Earth Federation leveraged Amuro Ray’s skills to gain victory over Zeon in the war.
In the thrilling world of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, it was none other than Char who seized the RX-78-2, leaving me without a mobile suit to pilot. Being the only one who could match his agility, my absence allowed Zeon to expand their territories across space. Ever since that fateful day, fans have been left wondering about my whereabouts post-Gundam theft. Intriguingly, the series seems to erase my character entirely, even as other legendary figures reemerge. The closest we come to seeing me in action is when the original RX-78-2 materializes and during flashbacks to the initial series. It’s like I never existed, but the echoes of Amuro Ray linger on!
Despite not appearing explicitly, Amuro might have a symbolic presence within the anime “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX”. Char and Challia Bull’s conversation hints that the GQuuuuuuX itself may possess a living soul, reminiscent of the human component in the Evas from “Evangelion”. Towards the end of an episode, a translucent, blue spirit seems to aid Machu when she’s about to defeat the RX-78-2 piloted by Shuji. The arms and hands of this spirit bear a striking resemblance to Amuro in his pilot suit, but it remains unclear if it was indeed him assisting Machu. The anime doesn’t delve into how Amuro might have obtained his soul within the GQuuuuuuX, should he be there. Nevertheless, Amuro’s absence from “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” adds to his impact on the franchise, as even a potential spirit representation of him carries significance.
