Disney Cancels Live-Action Remake of Fan-Favorite Animated Movie (& It May Be for the Best)

It seems that yet another live-action adaptation from Disney’s library of animated classics is no longer moving forward. Starting in the early 2010s, Walt Disney Pictures has been updating these timeless stories for contemporary audiences, and movies like “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” “The Little Mermaid,” and more recently “Lilo & Stitch” have been huge successes, both commercially and critically. However, not all adaptations have been equally successful. For instance, the release of Snow White this year was disappointing, leading Disney to reassess its approach. Following the halt in production of the live-action version of “Tangled,” another remake of a classic Disney film has now been shelved.

As a passionate Disney enthusiast, I must admit my disappointment upon hearing that the live-action adaptation of the 1970 animated classic, “The Aristocats,” seems to have been put on hold. Initially announced in 2023, with the talented Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson set to direct the heartwarming story of a Parisian cat family caught up in an inheritance scheme by their conniving butler, I had eagerly anticipated updates about this film.

However, after some time without any new information, Questlove himself confirmed on Score: The Podcast that the live-action version of “The Aristocats” is no longer progressing forward. Although it’s saddening to see this project take a pause, I can’t help but feel that perhaps this may be for the best in the end.

With a new administration taking over, the Oscar-winning director expressed his plans, saying something along the lines of ‘Here’s what I intend to do, let’s dance through it all, and here are some examples, with a team supporting me every step of the way.’ However, after two administrative changes, he found himself thinking ‘Okay, well…’, eventually concluding ‘Perhaps this isn’t my time, given the numerous opportunities available to me right now.’

While Questlove expressed his desire to work on that particular project, he noted there are around twenty other projects vying for his attention, including four films at present. This means he’ll be occupied until somewhere around 2029 or 2030, implying that, unfortunately, the project wasn’t destined to happen, but it may come to fruition in the future.

The scrapping of the live-action version of “The Aristocats” might not be entirely unfortunate. Transforming animated films into reality doesn’t always result in success, particularly when it involves animal-centric stories. After all, the 2019 adaptation of “Cats” was met with widespread criticism, while Disney’s own reimagining of “The Lion King” was well-received but faced some backlash for the CGI lions’ limited emotional depth. Given these examples, it’s plausible that “The Aristocats” could have faced similar issues.

What Does This Mean for Disney’s Live-Action Remakes?

In recent years, Disney has found success by creating live-action versions of its classic animated films. These adaptations have been a major focus for the studio, as they aim to reintroduce these beloved stories to new audiences. However, the box office reception of the latest remake, “Snow White”, has not been favorable, with global earnings of just $145 million against a production budget of $270 million. This disappointing performance appears to have caused Disney to rethink their approach to live-action remakes, leading to delays or cancellations for upcoming adaptations of “Tangled”, “Hercules”, “Bambi”, and “Robin Hood”. Now, even the planned adaptation of “The Aristocrats” is in question.

It doesn’t mean that Disney has stopped focusing on live-action remakes, quite the contrary. The triumph of Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, which generated over $1 billion at the global box office and ranks as the second highest-grossing movie of the year thus far, underscores their commitment to this strategy. In the upcoming year, Disney’s live-action Moana, featuring Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui, is expected to be another blockbuster hit.
