A lot is depending on the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. As Marvel Studios wraps up its somewhat inconsistent Multiverse Saga, this December’s release is intended to kick off a grand finale. The film will bring together heroes from different realities to fight the formidable Doctor Doom. Disney and Marvel are doing everything they can to make Doomsday a huge success – they even released teaser trailers a year in advance to build excitement. Beyond box office numbers, they’re hoping the movie will be critically acclaimed and resonate with fans, helping to revitalize the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the film isn’t out for several months, Disney executives have already had a preview.
A recent article in Variety about Disney’s future under new CEO Josh D’Amaro reveals that Disney executives have watched footage from Doomsday. The article also shares Marvel’s perspective on the long-term prospects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There’s a lot of talk about whether the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) depends on the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. While some experts think this film is crucial, those working at the studio believe the MCU is strong enough to thrive regardless of any single movie’s performance. Studio executives are confident about the December release, and people at competing studios are privately predicting Doomsday will be the biggest box office hit of the year.
Will Avengers: Doomsday Be the MCU’s Big Comeback?

Given that the release of Avengers: Doomsday is still a ways off, Disney executives aren’t likely to share any criticisms. The studio wants to avoid any negative attention that could affect how people view the movie. However, it’s positive to hear they’re happy with the footage so far. Industry experts also seem optimistic, predicting it will be the highest-grossing film of 2026. Considering other big releases planned for next year, like The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Toy Story 5, it would be a strong indicator of success for the Marvel Cinematic Universe if Doomsday outperforms them all.
Although initial reactions to Doomsday are good, the movie still faces some uncertainty. The current storyline, focused on the multiverse, hasn’t been as smooth as the previous Infinity Saga, which carefully led to the battle against Thanos. This new saga has been uneven, and the planned main villain, Kang the Conqueror, has been sidelined. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are experienced with large-scale Marvel films, but it’s unclear if they can successfully bring everything together without the same level of prior groundwork. Some fans also worry that Marvel is relying too much on familiar faces, like Chris Evans’ return, to generate excitement.
Just like Disney’s positive reaction to early footage of Doomsday, Marvel wouldn’t claim the success of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe hinges on one movie. The directors, the Russos, are already feeling the pressure to wrap up the Multiverse Saga well, so adding more pressure based on a single film’s performance wouldn’t be helpful. That part of the report likely means Marvel is optimistic about the MCU’s future and believes fans will enjoy the new Avengers movies. Kevin Feige has stated that Marvel plans to release fewer projects overall, focusing on making higher-quality films and shows as the MCU moves into a new phase.
While underperforming movies like Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars would definitely hurt the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they likely wouldn’t destroy the franchise completely. The MCU is now such a huge brand that a single film, even an important one like Avengers: Doomsday, couldn’t sink it. Marvel is already planning for the future with projects like a new X-Men series and Black Panther 3. Even if the current Multiverse Saga doesn’t end strongly, these individual films will still generate excitement and have the potential to be very successful. Importantly, Secret Wars is intended to simplify the storyline and set things up for a fresh start. Of course, it would be ideal if Doomsday was a blockbuster, but the MCU’s overall future isn’t at risk.
