Disney+ Officially Shelves Its 4th Star Wars TV Show

Disney+ has paused development on yet another Star Wars series, making it the fourth show from the franchise to be cancelled. While Star Wars has been a major success on Disney+ since the streaming service launched in 2019 – with ten seasons of live-action TV across seven shows – things have slowed down recently. As of 2026, a growing number of planned projects are being put on hold before they can be released.

Lucasfilm recently confirmed to Empire magazine that Season 4 of The Mandalorian won’t be released on Disney+. Creator Jon Favreau explained that a complete season was written, but put on hold due to the Hollywood strikes of 2023. Instead of the Disney+ season, Favreau is now focusing on the upcoming movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will be in theaters on May 22nd.

Traditionally, Star Wars has been known as a series of films. While shows like The Clone Wars and Rebels were also created, they primarily served to add depth to the Star Wars world and attract their own dedicated fans.

Things shifted in the 2020s when Star Wars began focusing on live-action stories on Disney+. While shows like The Mandalorian and Andor were successful, others—including The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Acolyte—didn’t quite live up to expectations.

Things are looking worse for Star Wars on Disney+. With more shows being canceled or put on hold, it seems the streaming strategy wasn’t entirely successful, and Lucasfilm is now focusing more on making movies again.

Rangers of the New Republic

Out of all the Star Wars series that were cancelled before appearing on Disney+, the loss of Rangers of the New Republic feels particularly disappointing, as it appeared to be a key piece of a larger story.

I was so excited when Disney announced this series during Investor Day 2020, along with news about Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett! It’s meant to happen at the same time as The Mandalorian, and it feels like another awesome piece of this expanding Star Wars universe they’re building – the Mandoverse, as fans are calling it.

Originally, the idea was to bring all these shows together in one big crossover event, but that doesn’t seem as probable now.

Gina Carano, known for her role as Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, lost her job at Lucasfilm in February 2021. This followed a number of posts she made on social media that were considered controversial, and she was also slated to star in a project called Rangers.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, later revealed that the show was originally created specifically for Gina Carano, and no scripts were ever developed. Instead of finding a new actor or changing the story, Lucasfilm decided to cancel the project altogether, incorporating some of its ideas into later episodes of The Mandalorian.

Lando

The story of Lando Calrissian has been somewhat unpredictable, lacking a clear direction from the start. Similar to the planned ‘Rangers of the New Republic’ series, it was first revealed at Disney’s investor presentation in 2020, with Donald Glover confirmed to return as the charming character he played in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’.

The project initially showed promise. After showrunner Justin Simien (known for Dear White People) joined, development began with story outlines, artwork, and even some scripts. Unfortunately, it’s now been cancelled.

In 2023, Simien told TopMob he hadn’t heard anything about the Disney+ series since Disney’s presentation to investors in 2020, and felt out of the loop regarding its progress.

Simien was truly proud of the project, explaining he’d put a lot of effort and passion into creating what he felt was an excellent show. He said everyone who watched it enjoyed the final result.

As of 2026, a Lando movie is still being planned, and former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has indicated it’s possible. However, it’s uncertain if the movie will ever be made. The planned Lando series for Disney+ has been cancelled.

The Acolyte Season 2

《The Acolyte》is perhaps the most unusual case here, as it began airing but was then unexpectedly removed from the schedule.

The series, created by Leslye Headland, centered around twin sisters Osha and Mae, portrayed by Amandla Stenberg, and their encounter with a puzzling Sith warrior named Qimir, played by Manny Jacinto. While the first season concluded with a shocking cliffhanger – including the first live-action appearance of Darth Plagueis – the show has been cancelled and won’t return for another season.

Although the show started strong, becoming Disney+’s most popular premiere of 2024, viewership declined sharply after just three weeks. This drop made the show’s high production costs difficult to defend. Disney Entertainment’s Alan Bergman admitted the show’s performance “wasn’t where we needed it to be given the cost structure.”

The show faced strong negative reactions online, fueled by criticism from those opposed to progressive viewpoints, which negatively affected how the public viewed it during its entire run.
