It’s great to see an adventure movie with a female lead become popular on a major streaming service, especially when it’s based on a well-loved story that hasn’t gotten enough attention. This film has reached #9 on Netflix, quickly gaining millions of views as the year comes to a close.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited about the news that Amazon is continuing the Tomb Raider story with Sophie Turner as Lara Croft – and Sigourney Weaver joining the cast! It’s no surprise to me that Alicia Vikander’s 2018 Tomb Raider is suddenly popular again on Netflix. That film showed a young, determined Lara, and it’s a really compelling origin story – she’s trying to figure out what happened to her father, and it leads her on this incredible, dangerous adventure to a legendary tomb near Japan.
It’s A Fun Movie That Didn’t Land With Critics
The film received mixed reviews, scoring only 50% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 52% from general audiences. Critics found the movie felt overly long and disjointed, with one reviewer comparing it to a series of disconnected video game-like stunts. While Alicia Vikander’s performance as Lara Croft was praised, it wasn’t enough to save the film. Jeff York of Creative Screenwriting noted the movie had energetic moments and good action, but the story itself felt predictable and lacked originality.
Overall, audience reactions were similar, but some viewers also criticized Alicia Vikander’s appearance, claiming she didn’t fit the traditionally ‘sexy’ image of Lara Croft and lacked the physical attributes for the role – a point many felt was irrelevant. Beyond that, viewers found the adaptation didn’t quite capture the spirit of the game, felt the villains were weak, the plot was confusing, and the characters were unengaging.
Overall, the 2018 Tomb Raider movie is an enjoyable adventure. While the script has some flaws, the actors deliver strong performances and the film features stunning visuals. It’s a good choice for entertainment while we anticipate the upcoming Amazon series and new video games.
