Doctor Doom now rules the world, and no matter how hard heroes fight against him, he always finds a way to win. The Fantastic Four refused to accept his rule and tried to defeat him, believing they finally had when Doom revealed his secret. Whenever the heroes seemingly won, Doom would use his magical powers to rewind time to before the battle, retaining all his memories. This allowed him to try again and again, an infinite number of times if necessary, making it appear as though each victory was the first time. Nobody realized he was resetting the timeline.
Doctor Doom had a foolproof plan to win: he could simply reload a previous save whenever things didn’t go his way. All he needed to do was avoid making mistakes. However, true to form, he failed. In *Fantastic Four* (2025) #3, we see how the Fantastic Four eliminated Doom’s greatest strength and how his core weakness ultimately led to his defeat. This weakness is the root cause of all his failures and is a fundamental part of who he is. It all began when Doom prioritized boasting over securing victory.
A Perfect Victory Thrown Out for His Ego
After being defeated by the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom revealed his plan, confidently claiming they were powerless to prevent it. In that instant, Sue Storm sent a message – and their Time Sled – back to their past selves. They quickly understood Doom’s scheme and located the device powering it in Antarctica. However, Doom appeared to stop them from interfering. Reed Richards realized destroying the device would unravel all of time and space, leading Doom to believe he had won and begin a familiar gloating speech. But before he could finish, Johnny Storm had a clever idea: instead of destroying the machine, they repurposed Doom’s reset points, turning them into save points.
Doom was hit hard by the Thing, so he tried to rewind time. However, each rewind brought him back to the moment before the punch. Realizing what was happening, Doom repeatedly reset time, desperately searching for a way to dodge the blow. He did this for what felt like a thousand years, until the time-resetting mechanism broke down, and the punch finally connected. Though Doom escaped, his ability to easily win was gone – he could no longer manipulate time. Ultimately, he was responsible for his own downfall.
Doom Is the Pettiest, Most Egotistical Man Imaginable
Someone with endless chances shouldn’t be able to lose, but Doom managed to. He lost as soon as he boasted to his enemies, giving them an opportunity to react. He could have simply stayed silent, reset the situation, and tried again, but Doom couldn’t resist gloating, even though those he was gloating to were about to be erased from existence. He even called Mister Fantastic a fool for explaining how they’d escaped, and then immediately revealed his entire plan for recapturing them.
Doctor Doom’s greatest failing isn’t his power, but his massive ego. He believes so strongly in his own superiority that being outsmarted by Reed Richards hurts him more than any physical attack. If he could just set aside his pride, he’d be capable of defeating the Fantastic Four, but he consistently refuses. Doom always takes opportunities to show off and prove he’s better than the FF, and it always backfires. This flaw is actually what makes him such a compelling character. Everyone recognizes that Doom is his own worst enemy-except Doom himself. His unwavering ego is the root of his villainy. He’s a fascinating villain because he’s both incredibly powerful and deeply flawed, and that’s why fans love him.
Doctor Doom’s huge, but delicate, ego is a core part of who he is and absolutely needs to be shown in any version of the character, particularly if he appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He simply isn’t Doctor Doom without being incredibly arrogant. What are your thoughts? Share them in the ComicBook Forum!
