I can’t believe it! After waiting almost nine years since the last episode, the BBC has finally announced that Doctor Foster is coming back for a third – and last – season. I’m so excited to see what happens with Gemma Foster!
Suranne Jones will be back as Gemma Foster in the new season, which will be told in five parts. Bertie Carvel and Tom Taylor are also returning as Simon and Tom. Filming is scheduled to begin this spring in Hertfordshire and the surrounding areas.
The new season of the show picks up ten years after Gemma Foster’s elaborate plan to get back at her unfaithful husband, Simon. While her revenge was successful, it led to the disappearance of her teenage son, Tom. Now, Gemma is a doctor trying to move on with her life. She’s still living in the same house, but she’s found someone new and is preparing to get married.
With the wedding fast approaching and loved ones arriving, old secrets start to surface, putting Gemma’s happiness and good name at risk. As she tries to shield her family and uncover who’s trying to harm her, can she resolve the issues from her past, get justice, and secure the future she wants before time runs out?

When I was asked about returning to Doctor Foster, I immediately knew it was the right moment,” Jones stated. “We felt it was important to have some time pass after the first two seasons, and we wanted to bring back Tom – Gemma and Simon’s son – as an adult, with his own questions to explore.
This story really focuses on taking responsibility and asking tough questions. Can anyone truly escape the effects of their past experiences and heal enough to move on? Gemma and Simon definitely have a lot to work through!
I’m thrilled to be working with the incredibly talented Mike Bartlett and the team at Drama Republic on these scripts, and I’m really looking forward to starting filming soon.
Bartlett also explained that he’d always wanted to finish Gemma’s story, which centers on a woman fighting for fairness in a difficult world. He believes this theme is just as important today as it was when the story began with the discovery of a blonde hair on a scarf.

Fans eager for the return of Doctor Foster had a brief revisit to that world in 2020 with the spin-off series Life, which featured Victoria Hamilton and Adam James reprising their original roles on BBC One.
Rumors about a Doctor Foster return started last November, but the show’s comeback has only now been officially announced.
