Russell T Davies, the head writer of Doctor Who, has hinted that a new announcement is coming soon, following news that the Christmas special‘s release has been postponed.
Although the BBC hasn’t officially said anything, The Sun newspaper reports that the Doctor Who holiday special, originally planned for this year, might now air around Easter 2027. This delay is reportedly due to the ongoing search for the next actor to play the Doctor. The BBC has not provided a statement when asked for comment.
During an interview on BBC Radio 2, Davies didn’t comment on the report, but when DJ Gary Davies asked if an announcement about the next Doctor was coming soon, he didn’t answer directly.
He said an announcement is coming soon, but it’s taking a while because the BBC’s approval process is very slow and requires many layers of sign-off.
I expect a press release within a week or two, but honestly, things move slowly here, so I’m not entirely confident about that timeline. You understand how it is around here!

The author, currently publicizing his Channel 4 show Tip Toe, also discussed his work as showrunner on Doctor Who. He previously led the revival of the series in 2005 and returned to the role to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
I’m always working on finding new talent,” he said. “It involves scripts, actors, and the casting process – like discovering Ncuti Gatwa right after he finished Sex Education. It’s about staying aware of who the next big star will be. Honestly, Ncuti is an incredibly fast-rising talent.

He explained that coordinating a project involves many moving parts – managing the budget, sticking to the schedule, figuring out locations, and working with writers and directors. He emphasized it’s a team effort, despite sometimes jokingly taking all the credit!
It feels like just yesterday Ncuti Gatwa finished his run as the Doctor in ‘The Reality War,’ the last episode of season fifteen. The ending was a huge surprise – instead of a new face, his Doctor regenerated into Billie Piper, who’s coming back as Rose Tyler! It was a really unexpected twist, and I’m still thinking about it.
After the episode broadcast, Piper didn’t receive on-screen credit as the Doctor, which made some viewers question the full extent of her involvement in the show.
When Piper announced her return, she shared how much she loves the show and had always hoped to come back to the ‘Whoniverse,’ as she has many fond memories from her time there.
Getting the chance to return to the TARDIS was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. As for the details – who’s involved, how it happens, why, and when – you’ll have to wait and find out!
Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
