Doctor Who icon Carole Ann Ford reacts to Christmas special cancellation news – and reveals Susan return hopes

Carole Ann Ford, who played the very first companion in Doctor Who, has expressed a desire to come back to the series. She feels her character’s story wasn’t fully resolved when she last appeared.

The BBC has decided not to air a Christmas special this year. The show is now open to bids from other production companies, and Russell T Davies is no longer leading the show’s creative direction.

This happened after Ncuti Gatwa finished his run as the Fifteenth Doctor, with Carole Ford reprising her role as companion Susan. Throughout the season, viewers saw glimpses of Susan seemingly trying to reach the Doctor, but the meaning behind these visions remained a mystery. Susan didn’t appear in the final episode, ‘The Reality War,’ where Gatwa’s Doctor transformed back into Billie Piper’s character.

Following the show’s cancellation, Ncuti Gatwa’s co-star Millie Gibson told TopMob she believes ‘Doctor Who’ will definitely return successfully.

She enthusiastically confirmed she’d be happy to reprise her role and complete her character’s story, saying, “Absolutely! I would love to return!”

She also shared a message with her fans and the outgoing showrunner, Russell T Davies, expressing her gratitude for their continued loyalty and support. She jokingly added to Davies, “It was brief, but thank you!”

Carole Ford originally played Susan Foreman in the very first episode of Doctor Who, ‘An Unearthly Child’, back in 1963. Fans had hoped to see her reprise the role for years, and she finally returned in ‘The Interstellar Song Contest’.

In an interview with TopMob last year, the actress discussed reports that the season 15 finale had been altered. She revealed, “Many people are aware that additional footage was filmed but ultimately didn’t make it into the episode.”

Naturally, a few extra scenes needed to be filmed. Some earlier footage no longer fit after certain adjustments were made, so new shots were necessary to align with the revised story.

The BBC recently announced its ongoing commitment to Doctor Who, confirming the show will continue. To ensure its future and meet BBC guidelines, they will be opening up the production of the series to bids from different companies this year.

The BBC, along with Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf, have decided to cancel the Doctor Who Christmas special that was previously planned. This decision was made after careful thought.

We didn’t make this decision easily, and we know fans will be upset. However, to ensure the show has a strong future, we’ve decided against a one-time special and are instead focusing on investing in future series. This will allow the show to return at its best when the time is right.

A new animated Doctor Who series for young children on CBeebies is now being made. More information about how companies can get involved will be shared soon.

The BBC owns all intellectual property rights for Doctor Who. BBC Studios will still be responsible for distributing the show worldwide, and handling things like merchandise, digital content, and interactive experiences on the BBC’s behalf.
