Murray Gold, the composer for Doctor Who, has shared that he didn’t choose to leave the show in 2017; it wasn’t his decision.
Gold first appeared in the BBC’s revived sci-fi series in 2005, joining when showrunner Russell T Davies brought the show back.
He composed the music for Doctor Who from 2005 to 2017. He left the show in 2018 before season 11, when Chris Chibnall took over as showrunner, replacing Steven Moffat.
Segun Akinola composed the music for the Thirteenth Doctor from 2018 to 2022. Then, Murray Gold returned to score the music for Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary specials in 2023, coinciding with Russell T Davies’ return, and continued with seasons 14 and 15.
When asked on the “Who Knew?: A Doctor Who Podcast” why he left and then returned to the show, Gold explained to host Josh Carr that he didn’t have a say in his departure in 2017. He added that he doesn’t fault Chris Chibnall and fully understands the situation.
He added that everything turned out well and he felt it was the right moment to prioritize his family.
He recalled a very productive period in his career, mentioning several standout shows. He specifically highlighted “A Very English Scandal,” “Gentleman Jack,” and “Years and Years” as defining works of their time – projects he wouldn’t have traded the experience of working on. He also included “It’s a Sin” as another important part of that period.

When asked if he’d like to continue composing for the sci-fi show, Gold replied that he’s always open to working on Doctor Who.
The release of Gold’s Doctor Who season 10 soundtrack was finally confirmed a few weeks ago.
Although music from nine of the ten seasons Jeff Gold worked on (between 2005 and 2017) has been officially released, the score for season ten was still missing, frustrating fans who wanted a complete collection.
Everything shifted last month when a video on the official Doctor Who social media pages simply stated: “It’s happening.”
A release date has not yet been announced, so fans will have to wait for more news on that front.
