Russell T Davies, the head writer of Doctor Who, has revealed which of the Doctor’s companions he admired as a child. He specifically highlighted Martha Jones (played by Freema Agyeman) and called her storyline in the season 3 finale particularly impressive.
Russell T Davies brought back the popular BBC science fiction series in 2005 and oversaw it until 2010. He then returned to the show in 2023.
During a recent appearance on The Whoniverse Show with Tia Kofi, Russell T Davies revealed which Doctor Who companions he looked up to as a child. He explained it changed with age, saying he wanted to be like Sarah Jane Smith, or Jo Grant, and when he was very young, Zoe Heriot.
He added that he has a very long memory, going all the way back to the very first Doctor, William Hartnell. Because of this, he likely wanted to play the character of Polly, one of the original companions.
Tia shared that she’d always dreamed of playing Martha Jones, the Doctor’s companion in the third season of the show, which aired in 2007.
Davies described Freema as stunning, then shared that she had spent a year traveling the world on foot during wartime, calling her incredible.
When asked if he still feels close to the characters he created, Davies enthusiastically replied, “Absolutely! I love them. You’re always connected to something you’ve written.”
He described the season 3 finale, saying he especially loved the imagery of her journey. He highlighted the opening scene, where she arrives on a cold beach guided only by a single light, calling it ‘epic’ and truly memorable.
He playfully commented on how quickly the Doctor must have explained the plan. He imagined the Doctor whispering something like, ‘Travel the world for a year, spread my name, and be back here precisely at 10 o’clock.’ He then added, with a touch of irony, ‘Technically, Doctor, that was well done.’
Elsewhere on the episode, fans were also treated to an appearance from composer Murray Gold.
After returning for the show’s 60th anniversary in 2023 following a departure in 2017, Gold hinted that the music from the anniversary specials, as well as seasons 14 and 15 (which are also known as seasons 1 and 2), will be available soon.
He confirmed he always keeps his promises and reiterated their commitment to a plan, which he believes will be fully realized by 2026, ideally encompassing all three parts.
Doctor Who will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Christmas.
