Doctor Who’s upcoming spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea is confirmed to air in 2026.
As a passionate film buff, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement when Kate Phillips, the BBC’s content director, spoke at the Edinburgh TV Festival. She offered some comforting words to Doctor Who fans about the future of our beloved main series, while also hinting that the spin-off is slated for release “next year”. Can hardly wait!
Doctor Who isn’t leaving anytime soon. Disney’s partnership has been beneficial, and we look forward to continuing it with ‘The War Between The Land and the Sea’ coming up next year.
In the forthcoming spin-off, we follow Russell Tovey as his character Barclay, an ordinary man, unwittingly becomes embroiled in a high-stakes endeavor to avert a catastrophic clash between humans and the feared Sea Devils, known from their appearances on Doctor Who.
Tovey has hinted at future developments in the series, mentioning: “The story unfolds within our reality. Global warming plays a significant role, and I believe it should be more prominently depicted in creative works to foster greater comprehension of this critical issue.

Tovey’s character was described as follows: “He’s an ordinary individual who initially works in the offices booking taxis for people. However, through a chain of events, he unexpectedly rises to become a significant figure in the world, requiring him to grapple with his new role and its responsibilities.
Indeed, much like the character from Doctor Who, he’s protecting the planet. It was incredibly enjoyable for me to portray this ordinary man who finds himself in his mid-30s or early 40s, oblivious to the fact that his life has unexpectedly turned out this way.
The show, led by Tovey, is something I adore, hoping it inspires and leaves viewers feeling there’s still a chance for change at any given moment. I feel a mix of pride, terror, and excitement about it. Creating it was an incredible experience, and the scripts were exceptional.
Joining Tovey in the series is Gugu Mbatha Raw as Salt, while Doctor Who favorites Jemma Redgrave (as Kate Stewart) and Ruth Madeley (as Shirley Bingham) will reappear in their respective roles.
The War Between the Land and the Sea will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2026.
