Arthur Darvill, known for playing a character in Doctor Who, fondly remembers his time on the show, but recently shared that he wishes he’d had the chance to film one particular scene that never made it to air.
Arthur Darvill, who played Rory Williams, appeared with Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amy Pond during Steven Moffat’s time as showrunner, from 2010 to 2012.
After Darvill and Gillan’s characters left the show, a short bonus episode called ‘PS’ was released on the BBC’s YouTube channel. It was made using storyboards from a scene that was never actually filmed.
The four-minute video shows Rory’s dad, Brian (played by Mark Williams in the show), reading a letter from his son. The letter explains why Rory and Amy won’t be returning.
In an exclusive interview with TopMob’s Doctor Who Insiders, Arthur Darvill reminisced about a particular scene. When asked if he regretted not being able to film it, he enthusiastically replied, “Definitely, yes.”
You know, the way I always pictured it, they were actually filming and just completely ran out of time and funding! It’s like they had to stop mid-shoot, which is a shame.
It’s always been a shame that we didn’t get to film that scene. I’m happy it’s now known and people can picture it in their minds.
Darvill maintains he has no regrets about how his time on Doctor Who ended, even though his character’s departure involved Amy and Rory becoming stranded in the past due to the Weeping Angels.

“I just think it was beautiful and messy and emotional and really dramatic,” he pointed out.
I remember watching it with all my friends when it aired, which was a bit out of character for me, and we were all really moved. It’s tough for me to be objective about what I see on screen, though, because making the show also meant saying goodbye – it was our ending, too.
He expressed relief that the departure of Amy and Rory wasn’t prolonged or unnecessarily extended. He felt it was best to handle it quickly and decisively, calling it strong storytelling.

Talking about then-showrunner Steven Moffat, and specifically how he crafted Rory’s ‘Lone Centurion’ story, actor Arthur Darvill explained that Moffat’s scripts always seamlessly connect to the larger plot. He said reading them felt amazing, because Moffat consistently delivered surprises that were both emotionally resonant and incredibly fun.
I was so excited to film those scenes – it was a dream role! It felt like we were making an Indiana Jones movie. We quickly realized how ambitious the episodes were and thought, ‘This feels like a Spielberg film!’ It was an amazing experience.

Darvill recently told TopMob that he and Karen Gillan are starting a new podcast together, appropriately named The Pondcast.
Darvill explained the podcast offers a chance to reconnect with Gillan, who lives primarily in the US. He shared, “We have a great rapport and chat frequently, and we really enjoyed working together on Doctor Who.”
It happened a long time ago, and many details have faded, but it shaped who we are today. Now, we can look back on it with fondness and celebrate its impact.
Arthur Darvill’s full interview will be published later this month.
