Jo Martin, known for playing the Doctor in Doctor Who, has hinted that her character, the Fugitive Doctor, will be portrayed with greater depth and complexity in the upcoming story Circuit Breaker. She feels the character was a bit simpler when first shown on television and is excited to explore more layers of her personality this time around.
Jo Martin first played the Fugitive Doctor in season twelve and has appeared again several times since, most recently with a guest role in the season fifteen episode ‘The Story & The Engine’.
She’s now going to be the lead in Doctor Who’s latest story, ‘Circuit Breaker.’ This adventure will unfold between June and September through different formats like comics, magazines, books, and audio stories.
Okay, so “Circuit Breaker” is shaping up to be a really fun ride! We’ve got the Fugitive Doctor back in action, and – even better – Ingrid Oliver is returning as Petronella Osgood. Expect classic Doctor Who threats like the Silence and Daleks, all converging on a story where, naturally, the fate of reality hangs in the balance. It sounds like a pretty high-stakes adventure!
In a recent interview with TopMob, Martin explained that the character is surprisingly complex. He said they’re still discovering new sides to her, which has been a wonderful experience. Unlike her portrayals on television, which often show only one side of her, the full character has much more depth and nuance.
Martin observed that the actress always comes across as confident and focused on television. He believes that working on projects like Big Finish and Circuit Breaker allows them to explore her character in greater depth, adding layers of complexity and subtlety that aren’t possible with more rigid TV formats.

She hinted at a more complex side to the Fugitive Doctor, explaining that there’s much more to her character than just strength. The Doctor isn’t always confident; she questions her choices, feels regret, and sometimes wonders if she could have handled things differently.
It’s great for Doctor Who viewers to get a glimpse of her softer side – it actually makes her strong, determined moments even more impactful.

Everyone has ways of concealing parts of their personality, and I believe she often uses sarcasm and humor as a defense mechanism. So, the chance to really develop her character, delve into her past, and show more of who she truly is, is fantastic.
The Fugitive Doctor will be returning with a fresh take on his character, this time working with Osgood. However, it sounds like they won’t always agree on things!
She always seems to need my help!” she said with a playful tone. “But I’m happy to be there for her anyway. We don’t always see eye-to-eye and sometimes have our disagreements, but ultimately we rely on each other.”
Plus, Martin is clearly delighted to continue her work in the Whoniverse.
She chuckled, saying, “This job just keeps going! I started working on Doctor Who years ago, and I’m still involved with little projects here and there. It really doesn’t stop – and honestly, that’s wonderful. I’ve never experienced anything like it in my career.”
The new Doctor Who adventure, ‘Circuit Breaker,’ will premiere on June 25th on the official UNIT website. You can also watch Doctor Who anytime on BBC iPlayer.
