The actors playing Doctor Who, Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill, hinted at a fresh relationship between their characters during their upcoming journey within the Doctor Who universe.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that the dynamic duo who graced our screens together as the Thirteenth Doctor and Yaz Khan in “The Power of the Doctor” back in 2022 are coming back for more! In the upcoming second installment, titled “The Return of the Doctor”, they will once again take on new audio adventures from Big Finish Productions. I can hardly wait to join them on these thrilling journeys!
In this latest adventure, as Whittaker points out, we witness a shift in Yaz and the Doctor’s relationship. Specifically, Yaz becomes more assertive towards the Doctor.
She noted that we often agree, but it’s especially beneficial for the Doctor to face challenges and defend aspects of her character – it’s really healthy for her.
Gill stated: “For much of the TV show, Yaz was mainly absorbing knowledge from the Doctor, so she had to listen more than talk. However, in this series, their relationship has progressed to a stage where she can voice her disagreements when necessary, challenge some of the Doctor’s decisions, express her ideas about what the Doctor should be, and even take leadership roles – which may not always be beneficial!
Fans of Doctor Who will recall that, following three seasons filled with hints of romance between Thirteen and Yaz, it was disclosed during the 2022 New Year’s Day special, titled “Eve of the Daleks,” that Yaz had developed feelings for the Time Lord.
In her second-to-last appearance as The Doctor on Doctor Who, titled “Legend of the Sea Devils,” Thirteen expressed that she returned Yaz’s feelings. However, she ruled out any prospects for a romantic relationship between them in the future because of time limitations.
After successfully protecting the serene Zaarians from a menacing extraterrestrial danger, The Doctor and Yaz embark on a fresh journey. However, Yaz starts to ponder whether they are merely seeking new experiences, or perhaps trying to escape something. This summarizes the logline for The Return of the Doctor.
Besides Whittaker, Gill, and others, the cast for The Return of the Doctor also features Belinda Stewart-Wilson, Charlie Kelly, Will Kirk, and Stephan Bessant.
