Doctor Who’s Bonnie Langford was “never told” key detail about her iconic companion

Fans were thrilled when Bonnie Langford came back to Doctor Who, and excited to finally discover what her character had been up to since her previous appearance.

The 60th anniversary episode, “The Giggle,” brought back Langford’s character Mel, who reunited with the Doctor (played by David Tennant). The episode revealed what Mel had been up to since their last adventure together, including news about the character Sabalom Glitz, a former companion who traveled with her.

However, a particularly poignant moment occurred when Mel revealed a deeply personal struggle. She confessed, “I finally had to confront the truth I’d been avoiding: I’m completely alone. Everyone in my family has passed away.”

In a recent interview with TopMob, actress Langford confessed she doesn’t know what became of Mel’s family, and the show’s creator, Russell T Davies, hasn’t shared any information with her either.

She remembered a beautiful scene she filmed with David Tennant. In it, her character says something like, ‘I lost my whole family,’ and it suddenly hit her that he hadn’t ever told her about it. She realized that maybe it was better that way.

Allons-y!

Do we really need to get into the specifics right now? We can address those details later. One of the best things about Doctor Who is its freedom from timelines – because time travel allows you to jump around without worrying about things needing to happen in a specific order or everything neatly connecting.

It’s often better not to know everything, as a little mystery allows our imaginations to run wild.

Mel arrived on the show in 1986 having already traveled with the Doctor (played by Colin Baker) for a while. This was different from most other companions, whose first adventures were shown on screen.

Although Langford isn’t familiar with all of Mel’s past, she has contributed to developing certain aspects of it.

Looking back on her 2022 return in ‘The Power of the Doctor,’ she shared that it all came together very quickly. She received a call from the costume department asking for her input on what her character would wear.

Since I was still in touch with Mel and had listened to the Big Finish audio dramas, I felt confident in imagining what her character would be like now.

Langford also noted that he often wondered what Mel would be like today, observing that she seems much calmer now and is very focused on computers, while still keeping her work private.

Mel was incredibly loyal to the Doctor. Because I stayed in touch with her, it was wonderful to imagine what she’d been up to and how she maintained her bond with him.

“So then when I came to do it in the new TV series, it felt really comfortable to be with her.”
