I’ve been following the news about Millie Gibson and her experience with Doctor Who, and she’s spoken out about how difficult things were for her. She said she felt really awful because some tabloid newspapers published things that put her in a tough spot. It sounds like it was a really stressful time for her, and I feel for her having to deal with that.
Reports surfaced in June 2023 claiming Gibson was considered difficult to work with due to the show’s demanding filming pace. Later, in January 2024, it was suggested that the 19-year-old actress had been let go from her role as Ruby Sunday.
Gibson came back to Doctor Who for a few episodes, appearing with new cast member Varada Sethu alongside Ncuti Gatwa in the 2025 season.
The actress told The i Paper the experience was “horrific,” explaining she couldn’t publicly deny reports of her being fired because it would have revealed confidential plot details from the show.
“I couldn’t be like, ‘It’s a lie!’ [because] they’d be like, ‘Well, that’s spoilers,'” she said.
It was difficult to defend myself without causing a scene. I immediately felt awful because it seemed like people would believe the accusations.
Gibson said it was upsetting to be the focus of these rumors, as many people, including her friends and colleagues, thought she had been fired.
It was annoying how many people just offered a quick apology, saying something like, ‘Sorry this happened,’ when actually, it hadn’t. I appreciated the thought, but it wasn’t helpful.
Next, Gibson will star in ‘The Forsytes,’ a period drama based on John Galsworthy’s novels, playing the character of Irene.
The latest season of Doctor Who ended in May with a surprising twist: Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transformed into Billie Piper. However, it’s still unclear if she will actually become the next Doctor.
Viewers are eager to find out if the series will be renewed, but producer Jane Tranter says Disney – a partner in the show with the BBC – won’t make a decision about future seasons until after the new spin-off, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ has finished airing.
The producer of Doctor Who has spoken about the show’s future, emphasizing the importance of telling stories that are relevant to today’s world.
Despite recent discussions, BBC leaders have emphasized that the future of Doctor Who is secure. Kate Phillips, the BBC’s chief content officer, stated at the Edinburgh TV Festival that the show isn’t going anywhere and will continue to air on the BBC, even if a deal with Disney doesn’t happen.
