Yesterday’s Emmy nomination announcements recognized the science fiction series from the BBC for its exceptional quality.
Despite the fact that Doctor Who’s actors, its showrunner Russell T Davies, and various technical aspects weren’t recognized, the choreography team still earned a nomination for Exceptional Choreography in Scripted Television.
Last year in the episode titled “The Devil’s Chord,” the characters portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor and Millie Gibson as his companion, Ruby, had an exciting 1960s dance interlude to a classic tune called “There’s Always a Twist” following their visit to the Beatles at Abbey Road.
As I found myself standing in the hallowed grounds of a renowned studio, I encountered the notorious Maestro, a villainous figure who pilfers melodies, feeding off the very essence of sound and music that surrounded us. His power seemed to increase with every note he siphoned from our environment.
Following their victory over Maestro and reinstating harmony in the world, The Doctor and Ruby glided through the corridors of the studio, cafeteria, and iconic zebra crossing, then made their way back home, dancing all along.
In the scene, Shirley Ballas and Johannes Radebe, known from Strictly Come Dancing, join the duo for a dance, serving as their partners, right there in the hallway.
In this performance, Jack Murphy served as the choreographer, where he coordinated the moves for Jack and his partner, who sang and danced alongside Cilla Black, The Beatles, and a group of supporting dancers.
In this category, Murphy’s creation will face competition from his own work, as the Butterfly Ball scene from Bridgerton is also nominated.
In this category, you’ll find other performances such as “Severance’s Ballad of Ambrose and Gunnel”, several acts by Will Trent, and a pair of numbers from Étoile.
The science fiction series hadn’t received any recognition from the Emmys before, because it only became eligible for nominations after collaborating with Disney+, a partnership that took place two years ago.
It’s important to mention that even though this is a fresh direction for the television series, the franchise managed to secure an Emmy nomination in 2020, specifically for the category of Outstanding Derivative Interactive Program, due to its VR game titled Doctor Who: The Runaway.
