Warning: This article includes MAJOR SPOILERS for Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen!
The new Netflix horror series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, includes supernatural themes and may reveal a shocking connection to Rachel and her family history. The show was created by Hayley Z. Boston, who previously collaborated with the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers.
I was completely hooked by this story about Rachel, played by Camila Morrone. She’s getting married, but quickly finds out her family has this terrifying curse – if you don’t marry your soulmate, someone dies! And things get really complicated because her fiancé, Nicky, isn’t who she thought he was at all. Like the title says, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, and it really does – it impacts everyone involved in their wedding!
In my review for ScreenRant, I highlighted how well the show Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen combines various types of horror, including the paranormal. While the show’s basic idea already involves supernatural themes, there’s potential to explore these elements even more deeply.
Rachel’s Family Might Have Supernatural Powers In Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen
In the beginning of Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, Rachel is seen as overly worried and suspicious. The first couple of episodes suggest she’s imagining problems where none exist. But the show proves her right when real danger actually appears.
Whenever she nears something connected to the curse, even if she doesn’t know exactly what it is, she experiences intense fear and nosebleeds. These episodes seem to happen right before important encounters related to the curse – like when she met Nicky on the plane, before meeting her fiancé’s family in Iceland, and when she was near The Witness at the bar. It’s as if the fear warns her of what’s to come.
Additionally, Rachel sometimes instinctively remembers things that happened to her mother, which causes feelings of déjà vu and explains how she was able to draw the Coldies logo even though she’s never seen it before.
In the fourth episode of Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, we learn that Rachel’s mother, Ali, experiences prophetic dreams about her family. She not only senses when danger is near, but also has feelings of déjà vu and suffers from nosebleeds, suggesting the family possesses hidden supernatural powers.
However, both Rachel and Ali genuinely seem scared at times, even when it’s not about their family curse – for example, Rachel worrying about Nicky’s family harming her, and Ali being afraid of the Coldies owner. This suggests their fear could simply be a heightened sense of alertness and caution.
The Precognition & Sixth Sense Could Come From The Family Curse
A fascinating aspect of Rachel and Ali’s powers in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is their connection to the family curse. They can both see visions of ancestors who were also cursed by Death – looking either into the past or future of their lineage. Interestingly, they only experience these visions with family members affected by the curse, though it’s possible this could happen with others outside of what we see in the story.
The horror series on Netflix consistently builds tension when characters are about to marry someone who will ultimately cause their death. The increasingly frequent nosebleeds seem to coincide with their approaching wedding days. Because of this, I believe any supernatural powers the characters display are actually a result of a curse connected to their fate.
How This Shapes Rachel’s Ending In The Duffer Brothers’ Horror Show
The revelation that Rachel and her family have hidden supernatural abilities changes how we understand the ending of Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen. Portia’s surprise at Rachel summoning spirits suggests Portia herself hasn’t been able to successfully perform magic, even though she practices witchcraft. It also explains how Rachel’s ancestor was able to create a real potion that saved her at her wedding.
Now that Jude has received the curse, Rachel’s role as The Witness is even more crucial. As Jude grows up, he may eventually think about marriage, and he’ll also have to deal with any supernatural abilities that come with the curse.
Rachel understands what Jude is going through – she’s been there before. The previous person who experienced this didn’t explain things to her until it was too late. Unless there’s a hidden reason why The Witness can’t talk about the curse in “Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen”, Rachel can help Jude navigate these strange events and potentially avoid a disastrous outcome.
