Dolly Parton Makes First Major Appearance Since Rumored Health Issues

And the honorary Oscar goes to…Dolly Parton.

At the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards on November 16th, the 79-year-old appeared remotely to accept the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. This came just over a month after she released a video addressing recent health concerns.

Hello everyone,” the country music star said, accepting her award in a gold top. “I want to thank my dear friend Lily Tomlin for presenting this to me. Hi Lily, I love you! I’m also so grateful to the Academy for this incredible honor. Growing up with twelve siblings taught me a lot about the importance of sharing.

Originally from Tennessee, she went on to say that while they didn’t have a lot growing up, her parents taught her that generosity brings rewards. She’s spent her life trying to follow their example, and she feels incredibly fortunate – and this award tonight is proof of that.

Dolly Parton is looking back at her legacy.

Despite recent health concerns, 79-year-old Jane Fonda received an honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards’ Governors Awards on November 16th. Unable to attend in person, she accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award with a moving message reflecting on her life and career.

Hi everyone! It was such an honor to be recognized by the Academy! And a huge thank you to my dear friend, Lily Tomlin, for presenting me with the award – I adore her. Growing up with twelve siblings definitely taught me a thing or two about the importance of sharing, and that’s a lesson I’ve carried with me always. It really means the world to be acknowledged in this way.

The singer went on to say, “It wasn’t about having a lot to give, but my parents taught me that generosity brings rewards. I’ve tried to follow their lead my whole life, and I’ve been incredibly fortunate – this award tonight is just one example.”

Dolly Parton was honored at a ceremony – alongside Tom Cruise, Wynn Thomas, and Debbie Allen – for her lifelong commitment to helping others. This includes her work through the Dollywood Foundation, which supports children in her hometown, and her Imagination Library, a program dedicated to promoting literacy.

The star of 9 to 5 said she was deeply honored just to be nominated, but winning the award felt like a true blessing. She explained that she didn’t take such recognition for granted and that it inspired her to find new ways to help others – which, she believes, is what we’re all meant to do. She ended by expressing her sincere gratitude.

As a huge Dolly Parton fan, I was so relieved to hear directly from her addressing those rumors about her health! It was scary when she had to postpone some things, like her Las Vegas show, and then her sister, Freida, posted something on Facebook asking for prayers – it really worried a lot of us. But Dolly quickly set the record straight, and I’m just glad she’s doing okay and letting us know!

Shortly after Freida and her sister, Stella Parton, clarified things, Dolly—who recently lost her husband of 58 years, Carl Dean, in March—publicly responded to rumors about her health.

In a recent Instagram video, Dolly shared that she wanted to reassure everyone who was worried about her. She expressed her gratitude for their concern and prayers, saying she’s a deeply religious person and always welcomes support and well wishes.

She shared that she didn’t start prioritizing her health until after Carl died.

I just wanted to let everyone know I’m doing as well as can be expected, even though I’m still dealing with some things. As I’ve said before, it’s been really tough since Carl got sick, and especially after he passed away. I honestly didn’t prioritize my own well-being, and I let a lot of important things slide – things I really should have handled at the time.

Still, Dolly emphasized, she’s still very much ready to rock.

She shared that she still felt God had a purpose for her and that she wasn’t ready to stop working towards it. She expressed her gratitude for their care and asked them to continue praying for her.

Lupita Nyong’o received a diagnosis of uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus—in 2014, the year she won an Academy Award for her role in 12 Years a Slave.

She didn’t share her diagnosis until 2025, when she revealed on Instagram that she had been privately struggling with the condition for over ten years.

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, surprisingly, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier” in photos, she faced criticism online. But instead of ignoring it, she paid attention when doctors began commenting, suggesting she might have Cushing syndrome, a condition potentially caused by high cortisol levels or steroid injections. This prompted her to realize she’d received steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section. She later learned she had a form of Cushing syndrome that would resolve on its own, and she’s relieved to be healthy. She shared this positive outcome in a February 2024 newsletter, calling the news “the greatest news imaginable.”

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced a frightening health scare while having breakfast with her husband, Justin Bieber. She suddenly started having stroke-like symptoms, unable to speak and noticing her face drooping. Although the symptoms eventually passed, she went to the hospital for tests. Doctors discovered she’d had a small blood clot travel to her brain, which they diagnosed as a TIA (a type of stroke). Further testing at UCLA revealed Hailey had a hole in her heart called a patent foramen ovale (PFO). The blood clot had traveled through this hole and caused the TIA. Hailey has since undergone a successful procedure to close the hole in her heart and is now doing well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition that caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the rest of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained that the virus attacks nerves in the ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared that it became increasingly difficult to eat.

Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well, adding that while the situation was frightening and unexpected, he was going to be okay and was thankfully doing much better.

In his 2024 Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, he explained that he suffered a severe headache while in Atlanta and lost consciousness before he could take an aspirin. He doesn’t remember the next 20 days.

Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, was worried and took him to the hospital. Doctors discovered he had a brain bleed that resulted in a stroke.

After surgery, Jamie woke up in a wheelchair on May 4th, unable to walk. He then traveled to Chicago for rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed his gratitude for the prayers he received, saying he needed every single one.

A hospital scan revealed she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening stroke caused by a ruptured aneurysm. She immediately underwent surgery to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she experienced aphasia, leaving her unable to speak clearly.

Though the aphasia eventually passed and she was discharged after a month, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had grown and required a second surgery. This operation was unsuccessful, leading to a major bleed and a dire prognosis. Doctors had to perform a more invasive procedure, accessing her brain directly through her skull.

Fortunately, Emilia reports she has now made a full recovery and is doing well.

She described a confusing process of receiving multiple diagnoses from different doctors. Determined to find answers, Woodley, who comes from a holistic health background and studies herbalism, sought help from both traditional doctors and alternative healers.

This health journey lasted for ten years and led to deeper issues. She explained that constant physical discomfort created a fear of food, which then contributed to body image issues, confusion about her identity, and a struggle to feel comfortable in her own body.

Ultimately, after focusing on both her physical and mental well-being, Shailene Woodley has made a full recovery. “I am very healthy,” she shared, expressing her gratitude for her improved health.
