Who, or what, is Dolly?
The premise – a seemingly empty, lost mother struggling with childcare – might initially remind you of a documentary about Meghan Markle. However, ‘Dolly’ is actually a horror movie. The title character is a disturbed individual who wears a china doll mask and lives in a crumbling mansion deep in the woods, where she keeps a man chained up in the basement. It’s still a bit reminiscent of Meghan Markle, though.
Dolly does death!
The unsettling character of Dolly is portrayed by Max the Impaler, a large and imposing wrestler, who leaves children’s dolls scattered throughout the woods – a creepy nod to The Blair Witch Project. Young couple Macy and Chase stumble upon this unsettling scene. Chase plans to propose, but Macy has doubts about their future and whether she wants to become a stepmother. This theme gets flipped when Dolly unexpectedly finds them, leading to a confrontation with Chase and hinting at the intense horror to come. Dolly then kidnaps Macy, brings her back to his house, and forces her into a disturbing role-play, treating her like a baby and subjecting her to humiliating experiences until she finally fights back.
And so…..
Rod Blackhurst directs and co-wrote this horror film, which is a deliberately gritty and gory throwback to 70s grindhouse movies. It clearly takes inspiration from films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, both in its shocking scenes and the way it portrays a woman in desperate danger. The film is divided into chapters, and the main character is being positioned as a potential horror icon for future sequels. It’s worth staying for the credits, which feature a fun song and a post-credits scene.
