Dorothy’s Role in Wicked: For Good Revealed (& It Confirms 1 Popular Theory)

A long-held fan theory about Dorothy Gale’s connection to the story of *Wicked* has been confirmed with new information about the upcoming sequel to the 2024 film *Wicked*. The sequel, titled *For Good*, is set to release in November and will finish adapting the popular stage musical *Wicked*, which tells the story of Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West from a new perspective. Those familiar with the musical know that *Wicked* connects directly to *The Wizard of Oz*, and Dorothy plays a part in the story.

The latest issue of *Empire* magazine shares details about Dorothy’s part in the upcoming movie *Wicked: For Good*. While the film will show Dorothy’s journey through Oz and her eventual conflict with Elphaba, she won’t be a central character. Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, says this is a great approach, allowing audiences to maintain their own image of Dorothy. This confirms speculation that we’ll only see Dorothy briefly, as the Kansas farm girl experiencing an incredible adventure in Oz.

What Role Dorothy Has in the Second Half of Wicked

As a huge fan of *Wicked*, I always found the backstory of Nessarose and the tornado that kicks off *The Wizard of Oz* fascinating. The new movie, *Wicked: For Good*, is going to really dive into that – specifically, how Nessarose dies and what happens with her magical shoes. That’s what sets Elphaba, who we saw start fighting for animal rights in the first *Wicked* film, on her path against the Wizard and Madame Morrible. So, while we *will* see Dorothy’s journey down the Yellow Brick Road in *For Good*, it won’t be the main focus – it’s more about what *leads* to it.

Ariana Grande, who played Glinda in the movie *Wicked*, recently shared some insights with *Empire* about her character’s dynamic with Dorothy. She explained that Glinda has a playfully mischievous side when it comes to Dorothy, hinting at the secret close friendship between Glinda and Elphaba – a contrast to the antagonistic relationship suggested in the original 1939 film, *The Wizard of Oz*. Grande noted that Glinda is busy and doesn’t always offer Dorothy the most helpful advice, like suggesting the train to the Emerald City. She embraced this slightly dismissive side of Glinda, portraying her as a bit exasperated when dealing with Dorothy.

Judy Garland’s performance as Dorothy in *The Wizard of Oz* remains a classic and unforgettable part of movie history. It might have been a misstep to significantly change the character and actress for *Wicked: For Good*. Instead, keeping Dorothy as a somewhat distant figure in the sequel could be a great way to honor Garland’s original portrayal while also attracting a new generation of fans to this timeless story. *Wicked: For Good* is set to release on November 21, 2025, and its success could open the door for more films expanding the *Wicked* universe.
