Dragon Ball Has Exciting News For Fans in January 2026

It’s amazing how much of an impact Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball still has, even forty years after it first came out. Since Toriyama sadly passed away last year, things have been quiet on the anime front – no new projects have been announced, and the Dragon Ball Super manga has been on hold. I was surprised to learn that Toyotaro, who worked with Toriyama on Super, is now taking over both the art and story. He did release a new chapter back in February, which was a nice treat, but we haven’t heard anything about when the manga will officially continue since then.

It’s been a while since Toei Animation continued the Dragon Ball Super anime – the last episodes aired in 2018, ending right after introducing Goku’s incredible Ultra Instinct transformation, considered one of the best in the series and a combination of his skills with a powerful divine ability. Although there’s still material from the manga that could be adapted into a short new season, Toei Animation seems to have different plans. After a year that looked uncertain for the future of the franchise, things are about to change significantly in 2026. The year will kick off with Dragon Ball Genki Dama Matsuri, an event promising exciting surprises for fans.

Dragon Ball’s 40th Anniversary Celebrations Are Far From Over

A celebration called the Dragon Ball Genki Dama Matsuri is happening to mark the manga’s 40th anniversary. It’s confirmed for January 25th at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. Attendees can look forward to news about what’s coming next for the Dragon Ball franchise, including a new video game. Recent posts on the official Dragon Ball X account hint at what to expect, like a display of original artwork by Toriyama and a special exhibit of items celebrating the 40th anniversary. Fans are particularly excited about something called “Dragon Ball Moments,” which may showcase iconic scenes from the series – though details are still scarce and this is currently just a guess.

Celebrating 40 years of one of the world’s most beloved manga series is a big deal, and Shueisha and Toei Animation are going all out to mark the occasion. While the 40th anniversary was on November 20th, 2024, the celebrations continue. A highlight of these events is Dragon Ball Daima, a brand-new 20-episode anime series personally written by the original creator to honor the milestone.

In 2021, a special Dragon Ball Super Gallery project began as a tribute to Toriyama’s decades of work. Forty-two famous manga artists, including Eiichiro Oda (One Piece) and Tite Kubo (Bleach), participated. This year, a limited-edition box set with special covers was announced for pre-order, but it’s currently only available in Japan.
