Dragon Ball Super Artist Talks Continuing The Series Without Akira Toriyama

Following the sad demise of Akira Toriyama last year, fans of “Dragon Ball” have been grieving and pondering about the future of the shonen series. As a tribute to his mentor and partner, the artist Toyotaro has previously expressed his intention to carry on with the manga in the future. Recently, at the Japan Expo in France, he shared insights into how he intends to approach “Dragon Ball Super” going forward without Akira Toriyama. Although no one can fill the void left by Akira Toriyama, Toyotaro is making efforts to pay homage to his teacher through continuing the story of the Z-Fighters.

At a recent Japan Expo discussion, Toyotaro expressed that while it might not be straightforward, it’s not entirely out of the question for Dragon Ball Super to carry on without Akira Toriyama. As he elaborated, he often forgot storylines like the Moro and Granolah The Survivor Arcs, seeking Toriyama’s approval. Although Toriyama offered suggestions, such as the introduction of the Heeters in the Granolah saga, many arcs originated from Toyotaro himself. He would also request Toriyama’s guidance for specific plot points. While Toyotaro acknowledged that continuing Son Goku and his companions’ adventures wouldn’t be simple, it remains a feasible option.

Where Can Dragon Ball Super Go?

The most recent time we encountered the manga of Dragon Ball Super was through a special chapter penned by Akira Toriyama and Toyotaro, which depicted Goten and Trunks choosing to become masked vigilantes. This storyline, written by Toriyama before his passing, is set prior to the occurrences in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, offering a glimpse into the high school days of Goku and Vegeta’s sons. Although this chapter and Dragon Ball Daima are prequels, we anticipate that when the Dragon Ball Super series resumes, it will delve into events beyond the battle against Cell Max.

Among various story possibilities, the most striking one is the unresolved question of Frieza’s ultimate transformation, notably his transformation into “Black Frieza.” This menacing character made an appearance towards the end of the Granolah Arc, gaining this power-up from a hidden Hyperbolic Time Chamber where he trained. After spending an equivalent of years within this alternate reality, Frieza has reached a strength level unparalleled in the universe, capable of defeating Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta with a single blow. With our classic antagonist now possessing power levels far surpassing our heroes, the Saiyans must strive towards an unprecedented goal and engage in rigorous training to achieve it.
