Just before Tokyo Game Show 2025 began, Square Enix released a new trailer for the Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake, giving fans a look at the updated gameplay features coming to these beloved classic role-playing games.
As an analyst, I’ve been looking closely at the Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake, and there are some exciting additions. Players can expect new combat abilities and, in the original Dragon Quest I, the ability to take on multiple enemies alone. Dragon Quest II is also getting a boost with a new character, Matilda. But perhaps the biggest change is a completely original underwater area added to Dragon Quest II – something that wasn’t available in the 1987 release. It really expands the world and offers a fresh experience.
Square Enix has shared more details about the new area in the game, including what players can expect and the challenges they’ll face.

In Dragon Quest II, you’re tasked with saving the world from the villainous wizard Hargon. As you journey across the land, you’ll find a ship that lets you travel between islands and explore underwater.
While underwater, players meet mermaids who ask for help. Their kingdom, Mersea, is in danger of being taken over by Mariella, a powerful and wicked champion working for Hargan.
After agreeing to help the Mermaids, you’ll need to dive into the ocean to find lost treasure to support your journey. Be prepared to battle many sea creatures and ultimately defeat Mariella, who threatens the Mermaids’ existence.

Explore a brand-new underwater area filled with challenging enemies in turn-based combat and dungeons overflowing with valuable treasure. The uncharted Seabed also holds hidden secrets, but only the most skilled and well-equipped adventurers will survive the quest to find them.
Who knows what secrets lie beneath the ocean’s depths in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake?
The Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is bringing a lot of fresh content to the original Dragon Quest games, which is really exciting for fans.
The first two Dragon Quest games were incredibly influential in shaping the role-playing games we play on consoles today, originally released in the 1980s. It’s great to see these beloved classics receive updated versions that honor their legacy.
I’m excited to discover the secrets hidden in the new underwater area of the Dragon Quest II remake. I can’t wait to explore the Seabed and see what it holds.
The game might include incredibly challenging optional bosses, similar in strength to classic foes like Xenlon from Dragon Quest III or Estark from Dragon Quest IV. Defeating them would demand top-tier equipment and careful planning.
We’ll have to wait until October 30, 2025, to dive into the world of Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake. It’s launching on Xbox Series X|S (with Xbox Play Anywhere), PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, the new Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Windows and Steam.
