
Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor, recognized as a Screen International Star of Tomorrow in 2020, is a producer dedicated to creating film and TV content that centers Black, Queer, and female stories. She leads Joi Productions, which received a £2 million Vision Award from the BFI to support independent production companies. Joy produced the successful 2019 film Blue Story, directed by Rapman, which earned £4.5 million at the UK box office. Having directed several short films, she is now releasing her debut feature film, Dreamers.
Isio, a Nigerian woman recently arrived at a UK detention center while seeking asylum, fights to maintain hope as her future hangs in the balance. She finds an unexpected connection with someone who offers support, reminding her that even when freedom seems impossible, love endures.
We spoke with Joy about the film’s creation, her thoughts on immigration detention centers, and her passion for romance!
