Dune 3 Gets the Huge Update Fans Have Been Waiting For

At long last, the eagerly anticipated update for “Dune: Messiah” has been confirmed, as production on the film has officially commenced. The official “Dune” franchise account on X (previously Twitter) shared the news, posting a picture of the expansive, desolate Arrakis desert as director Denis Villeneuve and his team embarked on their latest and concluding adventure in the renowned sci-fi series. The post’s caption includes a quote from “Dune: Messiah,” possibly hinting at where the narrative is heading. Notably, the film’s official title remains undisclosed, but it is referred to as the next chapter in Villeneuve’s “trilogy.”

The new movie in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series is now in production, as the caption says, ‘Embarking on a voyage to a place where we tread without leaving traces.'”

The third movie in the Dune series came together more quickly than many had anticipated. Earlier on, Villeneuve thought he might need a break from the franchise before making a third film, but the positive reception to Dune: Part Two from last year invigorated him. Prior to the announcement of filming, Villeneuve was occupied with finalizing the cast for the movie. Some significant new faces in the series are Robert Pattinson as the antagonist Scytale, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke as the twins of Paul Atreides and Chani, and Jason Momoa reprising his role as the ghola Hayt, who is an artificial being modeled after Paul’s late friend Duncan Idaho.

Despite being currently in production, Warner Bros. is keeping certain crucial aspects of “Dune 3” secret. The movie hasn’t been officially scheduled on their release calendar yet, although it’s widely expected to fill the December 2026 slot reserved for an undisclosed Villeneuve “event film.” Additionally, the exact title of the film remains a mystery. Contrary to some reports, it appears that the movie will be titled “Dune: Part Three” instead of “Messiah,” despite being based on the “Messiah” novel.

With filming underway, it’s just a matter of waiting for fans to uncover more about these crucial aspects, especially the release date of the movie. Since Villeneuve’s enigmatic 2026 film was announced, Marvel Studios shifted Avengers: Doomsday to December 2026. Given that Warner Bros.’ Dune franchise has been both critically and commercially successful, it seems unlikely that they’d want a box office clash with Marvel. Instead, it appears that Dune 3 may be shifted to another date, perhaps during the fall season (a prime awards season period). Initially slated for November 2023, Dune: Part Two was postponed due to the Hollywood strikes. Therefore, Warner Bros. might consider moving Dune: Messiah to early November 2026, as there are currently no major titles scheduled for that timeframe.

It’s intriguing that the post mentions the film as being the final part of a trilogy within the Dune series, although there are more books in the novel series following Messiah. Villeneuve has made it clear he plans to stop after completing this third movie, moving on to Bond 26 next. If Dune: Messiah proves as successful as its predecessors, Warner Bros. might consider continuing the franchise by adapting some of those additional books for the big screen. However, this could be challenging without Villeneuve leading the way, as he seems to be a perfect fit for this material and it’s hard to imagine someone else stepping in to take over subsequent installments. It’s possible that Dune 3 will serve as the final chapter of this epic series, delving into the corrupting influence of power.
