Dutton Ranch: A Neo-Western Spinoff Of Yellowstone With Landman Similarities

As a huge fan of Taylor Sheridan’s work, I’m really excited about Dutton Ranch. It’s continuing the story we started with Yellowstone, but from what I understand, it’s going to feel a lot more like Landman in terms of its overall vibe. It’s created by Chad Feehan, with Sheridan still involved as an executive producer, and it follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they build a life in Texas. It’s a new chapter for them, and I can’t wait to see where Feehan and Sheridan take it!

Following the conclusion of Yellowstone, two of John Dutton III’s (Kevin Costner) children will star in separate new series. One of these, Marshals on CBS, focuses on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) as he deals with the recent loss of his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille). Seeking a fresh start, Kayce joins the U.S. Marshals, and the series keeps the stunning Montana landscapes that fans loved in Yellowstone, but takes on a more traditional procedural format.

I was so relieved to see Beth and Rip finally leave Montana behind! They moved to a small ranch in South Texas, about forty miles west of Dillon, and it felt like a fresh start for them. They even have 27 acres of their own, along with Carter, their son. Being so far from Yellowstone, Beth finally started to let herself be happy, but I have a feeling this new ranch, Dutton Ranch, is going to bring some new challenges their way.

Dutton Ranch Is Set In Texas Like Landman, Not Montana Like Yellowstone

It’s understandable why viewers might assume Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler are still in Montana while watching Dutton Ranch. Paramount+’s promotion of the show as “Yellowstone season 6″ leads many to believe they still live in Big Sky Country. However, although Beth and Rip may return to visit, Dutton Ranch takes place in Texas, just like the series Landman.

Created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, the oil drama Landman has quickly become a major hit for Paramount+. The show, which stars Billy Bob Thornton, Andy Garcia, Demi Moore, Ali Larter, and Sam Elliott, is set in and around Fort Worth and Midland, Texas, and the oil-rich areas known as the Patch. Landman is a true Texas story, steeped in the world of oil.

In Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip feel like outsiders, even though Yellowstone is over. Rip’s past work in Texas and connections at the 6666 Ranch give him some footing, but the Dutton-Wheelers are missing a key advantage they had on Yellowstone: the intimidating power of the Dutton family name.

The Dutton family’s influence doesn’t extend to Texas the way it does in Montana. Montana is where the Duttons built their legacy, a state they fought for and sacrificed much to establish. There, they held political power and even had their own law enforcement agency, the Livestock Commission, which originated with their family. However, none of that carries much weight in South Texas.

In the world of oil and land deals, Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) is a seasoned pro, as shown in Landman. However, Beth and Rip, navigating the complexities of the Dutton Ranch, will have to learn on the job. They’ll need Beth’s intelligence, Rip’s strength, and both of their determination to overcome their new opponent, ranch owner Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening).

Dutton Ranch’s Natalie Alyn Lind Creates Teen Romance Like Landman’s Michelle Randolph

One of the biggest draws of Landman for viewers worldwide is its strong female characters, particularly Tommy’s ex-wife, Angela (Ali Larter), and their daughter, Ainsley Norris (Michelle Randolph). A significant portion of the first season focused on Ainsley’s intimate relationship with her boyfriend, a football player, which caused a lot of tension for Tommy.

Taylor Sheridan cleverly cast Michelle Randolph in Yellowstone and then gave her another role as Elizabeth Strafford in the prequel, 1923. Interestingly, her Yellowstone character is actually related to Beth Dutton – Elizabeth was married to Beth’s great-great uncle, Jack Dutton (played by Darren Mann), over a hundred years ago.

Natalie Alyn Lynd has joined the cast of Dutton Ranch as Oreana, a new character who becomes romantically involved with Carter. This adds a similar storyline to the one seen in Landman, which featured a popular teen romance with Ainsley. The connection between Oreana and Carter also mirrors how Rip and Beth first connected as teenagers on the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Dutton Ranch appears to combine the most appealing elements of both Yellowstone and Landman. While Beth and Rip have moved to Texas, it’s a completely different environment than Montana, presenting them with new challenges, risks, and adversaries. Ultimately, Dutton Ranch delivers a blend of the best aspects of both Yellowstone and Landman.
