In October, Electronic Arts (EA) is decommissioning four distinct video games. Moreover, EA has recently announced that yet another four games will cease operation on March 16, 2026. The company has not disclosed the reasons behind the shutdown of these four games, but they often occur due to either the expiration of licenses or the high cost of maintaining online servers for these games. Interestingly, all four upcoming shutdown-candidates have both licensing agreements and online servers, making them a ‘double whammy’ in terms of potential reasons for their termination.
The initial title in the series of four Electronic Arts (EA) games is “Dirt Showdown” from 2012, available on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Coincidentally, “Dirt 3” was launched a year earlier, also for the same platforms in 2011. Both “Dirt” games were developed by Codemasters, the same studio behind the two other titles mentioned in the announcement: “Grid Autosport” and “Grid 2”. The former was released in 2014 on Nintendo Switch, mobile devices, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Lastly, expected to be closed down early next year is “Grid 2”, a 2013 game available for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
Another EA Game Shutting Down in 2025
Starting from now, our collection will include five Electronic Arts (EA) games being closed in early 2026, and among them, the most significant is BioWare’s “Anthem”. Previously, EA had announced that this disappointing release from 2019 would be terminated. Interestingly, it is scheduled to close on January 12, 2026, approximately two months ahead of the four Codemasters’ games.
So Far, Not Too Bad
At the start of 2026, unfortunately, five Electronic Arts (EA) games are closing down, but it should be noted that four Codemasters’ games are not particularly significant. These games have been around for over a decade each and were no longer being played by anyone in 2025. This trend is expected to continue in 2026, meaning these closures won’t significantly impact many people.
On the other hand, the shutdown of Anthem is more noteworthy, given that it has the opposite set of circumstances. Unlike the Codemasters’ games, Anthem garnered significant attention and was considered a big flop during the last decade. Both EA and BioWare seem to be relieved about letting this game fade into history.
Five EA games are closing down in early 2026, but four old Codemasters’ games aren’t popular or played anymore by anyone. This won’t affect many people. In contrast, Anthem, which was once a highly anticipated game and eventually became a flop, is shutting down. Both EA and BioWare seem happy to see it go since it was not successful.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t forget about another Electronic Arts (EA) failure from 2021 that surprisingly is seeing a comeback and a temporary renaissance. However, just like Anthem, it seems destined to eventually close its doors as well. But hey, the gaming world is unpredictable!
