EA Begins Shutdown Process for Two Games in 48 Hours

Electronic Arts (EA) is preparing to remove two of its games from sale in just two days. One of these games is considered a classic, having even won Game of the Year. The other, while not as highly praised, was quite popular when it was released. Fortunately, these games aren’t being shut down completely – they’re only being removed from certain platforms. However, once a game stops being available on one platform, it often doesn’t stay available on others for very long.

Electronic Arts will be taking the servers for Dragon Age: Inquisition and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare offline on April 27th. Currently, this only affects players on the PlayStation 3. Other platforms aren’t affected right now, but that will likely change in the future – probably not immediately, but within the next few years.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

BioWare released Dragon Age: Inquisition in 2014 as the third installment in their popular fantasy RPG series. It received positive reviews, scoring 89 on Metacritic, and even won Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Some believe it won due to a relatively slow year for game releases in 2014.

This popular game is a single-player role-playing game, similar to others in the series. However, it also uniquely features a cooperative multiplayer mode, which will no longer be available on the PlayStation 3 version after April 27th.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare

Both Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare and Dragon Age: Inquisition came out in 2014. However, Plants vs Zombies focused heavily on multiplayer gameplay, even more so than its single-player mode. Because of this strong multiplayer component, the recent shutdown of its servers is a significant loss for players.

This game blends third-person shooting with tower defense, and it’s the third installment in the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. It received scores between 69 and 78 on Metacritic and was commercially successful enough to warrant a sequel, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, which came out in 2016.

Currently, only the PlayStation 3 versions are affected by these shutdowns. However, the Xbox 360 versions are likely to be shut down soon after, and the servers for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC could be affected in the future.
